This model, launched under the racing collection of the Speedmaster Range, is a timepiece with an evocatively rich history. Today, the collection is known among enthusiasts for being a part of six lunar missions. However, its history can be traced back to the early 1957, when the first chronograph, meant exclusively for motorsport and rally drivers, was launched.
Dashboards of Italian cars of the 1950s proved to be the inspiration behind the racing range by Omega. Embodying the brand’s belief of achieving the impossible and staying true to the pioneering spirit of adventure, the model exudes a sporty vibe. Masculinity and robustness are other features that can easily be associated with this model.
The black dial, adorned with three distinct sub-dials is the most unique feature of the model. Two of these sub-dials serve as a 30-minute recorder and a 12-hour recorder respectively, while the third sub-dial records seconds. Their “Clous de Paris” pattern gives them a brilliant textured appearance. The bezel, with its matt black aluminium tachymetric ring has been mounted on a 40 mm stainless steel case, creating a perfect contrast between the case and the dial. A matching stainless steel bracelet accentuates the look even further. The crystal is scratch resistant, owing to the use of sapphire, which has been coated with anti-reflective treatment for reducing glare. The tachymetric scale allows drivers to calculate their speed and adds to the functionality of the watch.
A certified chronometer, this watch is equipped with the mega 3330 Caliber, which is self-winding with column-wheel mechanism and a co-axial Escapement. The use of this movement ensures precision and accuracy. A power reserve of 52 hours ensures longer runtime. The timepiece is water resistant to a depth of 100 metres.
Omega launched its range of Chronograph watches in the year 1957, under the Speedmaster collection. Originally, the watches in this collection were designed as a sports and racing chronograph, and not for space exploration. It was then selected by NASA in 1965 for all manned space flights.
This remarkable collection of Chronograph watches has been exemplified in several series. Featuring a timeless design, the rugged and reliable Moonwatch Chronograph, is a classic chronograph. The Speedmaster professional was the first watch to be worn on the moon and on all NASA’s manned missions since then. The Dark Side of the Moon collection is a tribute to the astronauts of the Apollo 8 who were the first to see the dark side of the moon. With a metallic grey bezel built from white ceramic, the Grey Side of the Moon has been inspired by the lunar dust, which has preserved all the steps of mankind on the moon. An updated form of the classic Mark II was launched in 2014, which features an illuminated tachymeter. Honouring the decades-long connection of the chronographs with motor racing, the Racing was launched. To commemorate the historic occasion of the first lunar landing, the Apollo 11 45th Anniversary was launched, with its case crafted from grade 2 titanium. Other compelling series from the Speedmaster Collection include the Speedmaster 57, HB-SIA, Skywalker X-33 and Spacemaster Z-33.
The first watch on the moon was the “Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph”, worn by astronaut Buzz Aldrin. The producer, director, writer, and Hollywood actor, Tom Hanks and the adventurer, explorer, and mountaineer, Reinhold Messner, have been seen wearing an Omega Seamaster Professional.
