The IWC Portugieser Men’s Timepiece IW390406 comes with the dial finished in lacquer blue, which is the colour of hope for the Laureas Sport for Good Foundation. This classical chronograph dons a silver polished steel case, appointed with a silver crown, and two pushers to manipulate the dial motion. A blue lacquered finish dial adds to the beauty of this timepiece, with its silver Arabic numerals engraved as the hour markers of the watch. Silver toned hands, with a plume second’s arm along with red arrowhead, complement the dial with fine detailing, hence increasing the readability on the dial.
The silver bezel is held firmly by a black alligator leather strap, crafted by Santoni, for full wrist comfort and freedom of the wrist movement for the wearer.
Featuring IWC 89361 Calibre self winding movement, the IW390406 IWC Portugieser offers a power reserve of 68 hours when fully wound. It features Flyback function, an imprint on the edge of the dial, for quarter measurements up to a minute. It also features 2 sub dials; hour and minutes totalizer at 12 o’ clock, and a small hacking second’s sub dial at the 6 o’ clock position. A date display window is also crafted on the dial at the 3 o’ clock position. The Sapphire crystal, with anti-reflective coating on both sides, renders the dial scratch-resistant and shock-proof. This timepiece is also water resistant to an extent of 30 meters.
The IWC Portugieser IW390406 is a limited edition watch with only 1000 pieces manufactured till date.
The image engraved on the back of its case, “Time to play”, subjects to 16 year old Masha Nikulina’s winning design entry of the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation 2013 drawing competition. Her picture on the back case is a reminder that Laurens Sport for Good Foundation is focused to work for the betterment of every problematic region in the world.
The late 1930s was a pioneer calendar year for the IWC Portugieser watch collection. When two Portuguese businessmen ordered wristwatches with the precision of marine chronometers, IWC Schaffhausen decided to rise up to the challenge by creating a then non-existent wristwatch movement with the crown on the right-hand side which would remedy the problem. The Portugieser is a much sought after watch due to its minimalist design and simplistic approach to styling. Most watches consist of an automatic movement while others, in accordance to the pioneer pocket watch models before, require mechanical hand winding.
2015 marks the 75th anniversary of the IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser family, one of the most beloved and prestigious collection of the brand. This year was kick-started with a number of gala affairs in January, the most elaborate of which saw 800 distinguished guests and IWC Schaffhausen at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva. The evening was star-studded with watch enthusiasts and brand ambassadors. Over the past few years, IWC has continually bested its contemporaries by decorating the Portugieser with modernist technology such as the Tourbillon Mystere, the constant force Tourbillon and the 8-day hand wound movement with definitive plans to bring design and efficiency to new heights over the coming years.
English Actress Emily Blunt shares a love for the Portugieser watches that is very much in common with famous Austrian actor, Christopher Waltz. Friends of the brand also include screenwriter and filmmaker Mark Forster, sports legends such as Lewis Hamilton, Nico Roseberg and Luis Figo, all of whom have dedicatedly attended the launches of the new and improved Portugieser watch collection.
