SpotlightStarry-Eyed Symmetry: The New Zenith Defy Skyline C.X Edition

In collaboration with Collective Horology, Zenith have unveiled the 200-piece limited-edition Defy Skyline C.X Edition that is driven by the El Primero automatic high-frequency calibre with a 1/10th of a second indicator

The Defy collection by Swiss watchmaker Zenith is no stranger to receiving retro-inspired watches. Timepieces like the Defy Revival A3642 and Defy Revival Shadow testify to this claim. Adding to this retro-flavoured saga is the latest Defy Skyline C.X Edition—a 200-piece limited-run stainless steel watch made in collaboration with Collective Horology. Since its inception in 2018, Collective have joined forces with some of the most renowned names in luxury watchmaking, be it IWC Schaffhausen, H. Moser & Cie, or Zenith. Now a reputed watch retailer, Collective are focused on independent manufactures. When Collective and Zenith joined hands for the first time, they unveiled the Zenith Chronomaster El Primero C.01 x Collective—a limited edition watch, with a crisp and understated aesthetic. Now, for another collaboration with Collective, Zenith have unveiled the Defy Skyline C.X Edition, for which they reimagined their iconic Defy Skyline design, presenting it as a quintessential 20th-century industrial design statement with a streamlined look.

Less Is More: The Limited-Edition Zenith Defy Skyline C.X Edition

Prioritising functional simplicity, the Zenith Defy Skyline C.X Edition has been redefined with simplified aesthetic and essential elements. The date display is replaced by a more symmetrical layout centered around the 1/10th of a second counter, now positioned at six o’clock. This deviates from the standard Defy Skyline iterations that feature the 1/10th of a second indicator at nine o’clock and a date window at three o’clock. The signature starry sky dial has been redefined with much depth as well, as a gradient effect is achieved by the four-pointed star engraved with varying intensity to create an interesting three-dimensional effect.

The silver-grey shades give the dial a muted, industrial-inspired aesthetic. For some contrast and pep, the tip of the 1/10th of a second hand is punctuated by orange, along with the ’10’ mark on the sub-dial. With these fresh takes on the latest Defy Skyline, Zenith and Collective have captured the spirit of Zenith’s original 1969 Defy.

The Defy Skyline C.X Edition features a faceted steel case paired with an interchangeable integrated bracelet, both given a uniform matt sandblasted finish. Meanwhile, the sides of the dodecagonal bezel and caseback feature polished chamfered edges, creating a striking interplay of textures. In addition to the steel bracelet, there is a complimentary orange textured rubber strap with subtle orange accents that complement the watch’s orange tones. Overall, the watch offers good water resistance of up to 100m.

Powered By A Legend: The El Primero Movement

The Defy Skyline C.X Edition runs on the latest generation of the El Primero automatic manufacture movement. With this modified version of the El Primero 3620 automatic high-frequency calibre, the watch achieves a 55-hour power reserve. At its heart, the 5Hz high-frequency escapement directly drives the 1/10th of a second indicator and is further equipped with a stop-second function for precise time-setting.
