ReviewIntroducing: Virat Kohli’s Choice – The Tissot T-Sport PRS 516

Not all Swiss Made chronographs are expensive!

May We Recommend

Someone needs to change the definition of a ‘Watch Snob’. Is it really about measuring the amount of money you’re willing to spend on a timepiece? Sure one would argue that expensive watches are unique, refined and use excellent materials, which is why they cost so much (also because most of them are Swiss Made). But there’s an exception to this universal rule when it comes to Tissot. For years, Tissot has become the Swiss brand ‘we’ or the budget watch aficionado love, given how much value they offer for a price that’s hard to beat.

Tissot watches are known to be affordable and reliable and the one we’re going to talk about today is yet another example of that. Using excellent materials and powered by a refined Swiss Made chronograph movement, the new PRS 516 is a hard package to beat. Let’s find out more about the watch even our very own Virat is raving about:

The PRS collection – Homage to Tissot’s rich heritage:

The PRS collection actually includes a magnitude of styles and colours to choose from. Introduced in 1960 as the accessible chronograph people can rely on, the PRS series, even then, came in a variety of different dial colours and movement options; so much that there was a slim chance of someone getting two of the exact same watches! But there’s something that has remained consistent with the series for over 40 years now – i.e., the iconic long lug case and the fact that Tissot always chooses the highest quality of materials.

The PRS series is also well known for its ‘racing hole’ strap or bracelet which usually matches the dial colour. The racing-hole strap is probably the most consistently recognizable element of the PRS collection and I’m sure you’ve noticed it on different versions as well.

The history of the Tissot PRS goes back to the 60s when it was introduced as the accessible chronograph people can rely on.

An out-and-out Racing Chronograph:

Coming to the PRS that made the most noise this year, the ‘516’ of 2016 is an out and out racing chronograph with details that speak that aloud. Right from the tachymetric bezel done in carbon fiber to the dial done in the same theme, it’s pretty obvious this one was made for the racing enthusiast. The carbon dial accommodates three circular chronograph counters, with the 30 minute counter at 10 o’clock, 1/10 second indicator at 2 o’clock and a small seconds indicator at 6 o’clock. The central seconds hand doubles in as the chronograph seconds and allows you to calculate the average speed using the tachymeter bezel.

This watch is without a shadow of a doubt classy at a glance, yet it’s also one we wouldn’t recommend you wear to a boardroom meeting. On the flipside, it’s the ideal casual watch for day-to-day use and one you can rely on if you take it to the track. There’s a small date display at 4 o’clock as well.

Use of materials – uncompromised:

Like we’ve mentioned earlier, Tissot does not like to compromise on materials and they haven’t with this watch either. The bezel, that’s been done with carbon fibre elements has ceramic as its primary material and makes the watch ultra-resistant to all your accidental scratches and impacts. The 42mm case has been made in 316L grade stainless steel and the carbon dial is protected with sapphire crystal. You can even submerge this watch down to depths of 330ft/100m.

The Racing-Hole strap:

The PRS’s core identity or the ‘racing hole’ strap design completes the watch, though not mirroring the carbon fiber finish of the dial, it’s done in black and is secured well with an adjustable folding clasp with push-buttons.

A ‘seasoned’ sports chronograph quartz movement:

The 2016 PRS 516 is powered by one of the brand’s most reliable Swiss Made sports chronographs – the ETA G10.212 AD PreciDrive, a quartz movement that includes the two button chronograph complication and a date indicator. Tissot additionally, gives a guarantee of 2 years on this movement.

And despite all these complications, the watch excels in the battery life department as well, giving the wearer 38 months or 3+ years (with the chronograph stopped) until the next battery change.
