In June, this year, the Ressence Type 3 BB2 received the ‘Best of the Best’ distinction at the Red Dot Design Awards 2024. This category is the highest honour awarded by the Red Dot jury and is an indication that the ‘product or the project meets the high standards of design quality’, showcasing outstanding ‘innovation, functionality, formal quality, and emotional appeal’. “We are extremely proud that our unique vision of fine watchmaking is recognised and awarded ‘Best of the Best’ by the world’s most prestigious design award organisation.” stated Benoît Mintiens, founder of Ressence in an official press release.

And the young independent watchmaking brand have carried this offering to this year’s edition of Geneva Watch Days and rightly so. After all, their Type 3 watch is worth the hype. Launched in 2013, the Type 3 is the first ever oil-filled mechanical watch, which doesn’t compromise on the legibility and was even awarded the ‘Horological Revelation’ Prize at that year’s edition of the Grand Prix d’Horlogerie de Genève (GPHG). The brand operates on the philosophy of ‘less is more’, where industrial design is at the core of crafting watches for the 21st century.

This new black edition—the Type 3 BB2—further accentuates the hyper-minimal look as seen in all the Type 3 timepieces, thanks to a combination of oil and dark hue, which makes the thin space between the discs invisible. “An almost pitch-black TYPE 3 edition truly showcases the magic of our flush rotating discs, acting like a mechanical screen, tricking the viewer’s senses and provoking wonder,” says Mintiens.
The 44mm watch crafted in grade-5 titanium allows one to view the time from any angle, without any refraction or distortion, and appears smooth, thanks to the sapphire crystal found on both the front and the back. The crown-free design, further accentuates the wearability of this watch, making it a truly left- or right-handed timepiece. It features a reduced colour palette of primary colour tones highlighting the weekends and oil temperature indications on the dial.
This timekeeper is driven by the patented ROCS 3.5 module—an automatic movement fitted with 47 jewels and 44 gears, which uses the caseback winding for setting the day, date, and time functions, while beating at a frequency of 28,800vph to supply an energy reserve of at least 36 hours. Water-resistant to 10m, the Ressence Type 3 BB2 is presented on a black honeycomb strap fitted with a titanium ardillon buckle.
