Epitomising timeless designs and an enduring form prevalent in all their creations, the La Chaux-de-Fonds-based watchmaker Movado offers the suave gentleman a daring experience of time with the Movado Edge watch family. Iconic and perpetually innovative, Movado timepieces have always aimed at heightening the enigma of modern design with a fresh take on Swiss heritage.

The Edge collection is endowed with a mark of celebration and dynamic storytelling that transpires through sleek cuts, stunning textures and colours that infuse new energy into the brand DNA.
The Bauhaus Edge
The mainstay of the brand has been its close ties with the enchanting history of the Bauhaus movement and design. Regarded as the most influential modernist art school of the 20th century, the Bauhaus school of design sets a diktat for modern design that encourages simplicity, tastefulness and function.
Having an enveloping effect on moulding the world of art, literature, architecture, religion and sciences, the German design school grew into a mighty influential movement and inspired many artists to create unforgettable works. One such artist was Nathan George Horwitt who left an indelible imprint in the world of art, design and horology. Uniting the talents of two of the most important industrial designers of the last 70 years—Yves Béhar and Horwitt—the Movado Edge collection is a 21st-century collaboration of fine Swiss watchmaking and design-focused imagination applied to the legendary Museum dial.
The Awe-Inspiring Museum Dial
Conceived in 1947, the immaculately stark Museum dial and its pure beauty cumulate in an accurate manifestation of the German Bauhaus movement. Horwitt’s pièce de résistance is regarded as one of his most momentous works and holds a permanent place in the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York, by way of the Movado Museum Classic watch.
Crafted with an exceptionally simple philosophy, Horwitt turned around the future of the 137-year-old brand with this iconic single dot watch with no numbers on the dial. Regarded today as an icon of mid-20th century Modernism, the Museum dial remains one of the most acclaimed watch dial designs of all time.
Horwitt once famously said, “We do not know time as a number sequence, but by the position of the sun as the earth rotates.” Inspired by the workings of a sundial, the Museum dial classically feature a solitary gold dot at 12 o’clock, symbolising the sun at high noon and the moving hands suggesting the movement of the earth. Instilled with a dynamic reimagination of this design, the sophisticated Movado Edge timepieces celebrate this industrial inspiration that is rooted in the Bauhaus movement.
The Modern Reinterpretation
Moulding the Museum dial in a new form, Movado offers a clean, minimalistic aesthetic in the Edge watches that are imbibed with striking shapes and textures. Taking from Horwitt’s three-dimensional representation, the signature dot rises from the dial’s deeply concave, sandblasted surface, while a closer look reveals sculpted linear peaks around the dial’s edge—indicative of the sun’s rays—that subtly mark the minutes.

There is an all-encompassing array of men’s watches, available in 40mm or 42mm, in this collection, including impressive chronographs with bold and purposeful designs, straps and colours. Available in polished stainless steel or black PVD cases or free-falling double-faced calfskin straps or integrated silicone, these timepieces cater to different personalities and moods.
Crafted in an elegant palette of muted tones that impart a modern look, these timepieces lend a futuristic look and feel. The dial narrates a story in itself, owing to the concave sandblasted aluminium with ray-textured edges and a matching, raised and polished tonal dot positioned at 12 o’clock. These timepieces are water resistant up to 30m, making them suitable for daily wear. Ticking inside them is the quartz movement Ronda 772.

Staying true to its Bauhaus roots, Movado is instilling the ethos of intellectual pursuits and paving the way for revolutionary designs. Owing to its philosophy of attaining purity in design, this ‘always in motion’ brand remains as quite unique in the history of timekeeping.

He is also the brainchild of August Home, the smart-lock company he co-founded, and Jambox. Heralding a revolution in design and engineering, Béhar has recently turned his attention to producing 3D-printed homes for low-income communities in Latin America. The San Francisco-based designer is widely proclaimed for introducing the value of design to the business world, as is evident from his Midas touch in the Movado timepieces.
Nice informative blog.
How difficult or easy is it for replacing the silicone strap with any other nato or leather banda? The word integrated strap is confusing.
Hello Archit,
‘Integrated strap’ refers to the design of the strap and how it attaches to the case in a way that it appears as though it seamlessly flows out of the case. The attachment of the parts are concealed or disguised, with lugs that are likely not apparently visible. However, the strap is very much a different part and can be detached and replaced. In the case of the Movado Edge watches, the interchanging of straps is not a difficult process, but it still requires certain tools. We hope this answers your question.
