Panerai have unveiled a robust Luminor Tre Giorni PAM01628 timepiece, after drawing inspiration from their own glorious heritage of cushion-shaped large-cased sandwich-dialled tool watches, designed on commission for the Italian Royal Navy commandos stationed on high-risk underwater missions. This new watch, which extends the popular Panerai Luminor line, offers an impressive three days of power reserve! Hence, the usage of the Italian term, ‘Tre Giorni’.

Sandwich Anyone? The Luminor Tre Giorni Patented Case And Dial

At 47mm case size, the Luminor Tre Giorni tool watch is relatively bulky, and when coupled with the watch’s overall robust aesthetic, leans towards a masculine appearance. Its signature cushion-shaped case is topped with a steel bezel—both have a patina finish to encourage natural aging—that is in sharp contrast to the other steel architectural elements with brushed finish—the bridge, lever and buckle. The second patented feature is the large crown protecting device. Another iconic design trait is the sandwich dial. This grainy grey dial with black gradient is riddled with what appear to be beige ‘stencilled’ hour markers (Arabic numerals at 12, three, six, and nine, and rest bar indices). These elements contrast with the dial as these are applied with green Super-LumiNova. This dial, however, comprises two superimposed plates: the gradient blackish layer sitting over the luminous layer. This construction, it was found, offered heightened luminosity, so much so, at times the commandos on night patrol had to cover their dials with seaweed to reduce the strong radiance.

The Star Feature: A Reliable In-house Movement

The Luminor Tre Giorni runs on the in-house double-barrelled P.3000 calibre, visible through the openworked dodecagonal caseback, screwed with sapphire crystal and steel. This manually wound movement, comprising 161 parts. Its 11.7mm Glucydur balance wheel is responsible for ensuring 21,600vph and 72 hours of power reserve, and also offers protection via its anti-shock Incabloc Parechoc feature. The inbuilt traversing balance bridge increases longevity.
