ReviewCarl F. Bucherer Adamavi: Classic meets Character

Classic never goes out of style. Perfection is always in fashion. The aggressively priced Carl F. Bucherer Adamavi is perfectly classic.

May We Recommend

Carl F. Bucherer has a history of over 127 years during which they harnessed great values – the pursuit of perfection, attention to detail, technical innovation, elegance and strength. The Adamavi collection places these values in a beautiful manner – on your wrist. Carl F Bucherer’s Adamavi is a stunning example of the classic watch. Its minimalistic design is easy to fall in love with. It’s a watch that doesn’t try too hard to stand out. It doesn’t need to. With their understated and enduring design, watches bearing the name of Adamavi can be worn on any occasion. These puristic timepieces have their own aesthetic continuity, and therefore represent real value that is certain and timeless.

Adamavi means “to come to love something”

The very name Adamavi stands for a feeling that these watches trigger in the wearer: translated from Latin, Adamavi literally means “to come to love something” or “to take pleasure in something”. Because all the models in the range are characterized by timeless simplicity and mechanical reliability, they are more than just timepieces. They are true companions whose visual appeal will outlast the short-lived trends of our present time, conferring an aura of reliability and continuity upon their owners.

Sleek 39 MM Case with a see-through caseback

Watches in the Adamavi collection have a 39mm case made in stainless steel or 18k rose gold. Every watch features a see-through sapphire crystal case back, enabling the wearer to witness the intricate workings of the movement. The watch also uses anti-reflecting sapphire crystal in the front.

Some people may feel that 39 mm is just a notch below the size that they are looking for, but the designers at Carl F. Bucherer used the ideal layout with the inner circle on the dial, thin hands, open spaces on the dial and the raised indexes to give the watch a visually larger feeling. When you look at the watch- one gets the feeling that you’re looking at a 41 or a 42 mm watch. Yet because it is only 39mm – it fits perfectly on the wrist. With a height of 7.55mm, the Adamavi is a very sleek watch that can easily manage to slip in and out of the cuff of a shirt as you move your hand around. That is one problem that most connoisseurs face with many of the bulky Hublot, Panerai and IWC watches that are in the market today.

The Roman indexes of the Adamavi are raised and they almost look as if they are magically levitating on the dial. The indexes cast a beautiful shadow on the dial.

The Dial: The pièce de résistance

Less is more. This philosophy can be seen on the Carl F. Bucherer Adamavi collection. The Adamavi embodies a beautiful dial with the incredible indices and hour markers. The indices, in steel or 18k gold, are thick yet precisely cut Roman numerals that are raised over the dial. They seem to almost levitate over the dial and actually cast a shadow on the dial. This effect gives a lot of depth and character to the watch. Each of these hour markers are polished to perfection.

The presence of a signature inner concentric circle etched deeply into the dial marks the Adamavi’s dial. It is intersected by the date window.  The thin precisely cut dauphine hour, minutes and seconds hands (also in gold) further enhance the continued simplicity of the dial. The thin hands, Roman numerals, bevelled date window and the inner circle give the watch a much larger visual appearance than most 39mm watches.

The dial is beautifully balanced with raised indexes that cast shadows on the dial, an inner circle in gold which is etched into the dial, sleek hands and a bevelled dial that intersects the inner circle. It comes together beautifully.

The Movement: An engineering marvel perfected in Lucerne

Powered by an automatic, in-house CFB 1965 caliber mechanical movement, the watch clocks in a power reserve of 42 hours. Sized proportionately at a diameter of 26.2mm and a height of 3.6mm, the movement is equipped with 25 jewels. Designed, manufactured and perfected by the expert watchmakers of Carl F. Bucherer at Lucerne, it has undergone rigorous testing resulting in a perfect mechanical movement. In fact, it was only after six years of thorough testing that the movement was first used in the Adamavi collection.

A bevelled date display window: Arabic numerals with Roman indices

The Adamavi offers a bevelled date-display window at 3 o’ clock which adds depth and character to the watch. The beveling of the date window is a tough and intricate process normally seen in watches at much higher prices. The displaying of the date in Arabic numerals against a backdrop of Roman indices balances the watch. Instead of using a Roman numeral index next to the date window a single index marker is present to prevent the area of the watch from becoming too busy. Every detail of the watch has clearly been designed with great focus.

Strap options

The Adamavi collection comes in an array of strap and bracelet options ranging from a black alligator leather strap to 18k rose gold, stainless steel or a two-tone (gold & steel) bracelet. The 18k rose gold bracelets are also equipped with 18k gold folding clasps, and the leather strap with an 18k rose gold pin buckle.

Pricing and availability

The collection has been priced very aggressively. It is very rare to see a Haute Horology brand like Carl F. Bucherer providing watches that start at this price. It’s a watch which is as high in quality as a Ulysse Nardin or a Jaeger-LeCoultre but at one-third the price. It is not a dial with printed hour markers but a watch with gold indices which sets the bench mark for hour markers. It has several other such features which really goes on to set quality benchmarks.

What is really incredible is that the gold version of the watch is priced under 5.5 lacs. A gold watch from a brand of this level of quality and heritage is completely unheard of. Gold watches from IWC, JLC, Panerai begin at least at 9.5 lacs. If you’re looking to upgrade to a gold watch that will never go out of style – this could be the perfect one.

About the brand:

The history and development of the Lucerne-based watch brand is closely linked to the person of Carl Friedrich Bucherer. A visionary who created timepieces that moved with the times, in the truest sense, always combining extravagance and aesthetic appeal in extraordinary ways.

In 1888, Carl Friedrich Bucherer opened a jewelry and watch shop in Lucerne, and his name rapidly became a synonym for quality and originality. His two sons were destined from the cradle to follow him into the profession: one learned to become a watchmaker while the other trained as a goldsmith. Today, the combination of these two artistic skills is still reflected in the perfect form of watches, which are truly pieces of jewelry.
