May We Recommend
SIHH 2018 has presented some interesting new products from luxury and prestige watch manufacturers. Smaller sizes, significant updates to brand pillars, development in the movement manufacturing departments, and some modern-looking versions of classics have been among the stronger trends this year. And Panerai has a bit of it all.

Panerai Goes Big By Going Small
Without a doubt, the most impressive watch we saw from Panerai at the presentation was the Panerai Luminor 1950 L’Astronomo. This hefty piece is packed with functions – a true high-complication watch indeed. Included in the large case is a tourbillon cage, the equation of time feature, and it has moon phase and power reserve indicators behind it. A sapphire crystal caseback is particularly appreciated when what you see through it goes beyond heartbeat of the movement housed within.
Another high-complication watch was the Lo Scienziato. Set in a 3D-printed titanium case, this watch features a GMT hand and an am/pm indication. Equipped with a power reserve of six days, with the power reserve indicator on the back, as was the case in the Astronomo. The Scienziato also has an impressive tourbillon escapement as well.
However, what has baffled one and all at the fair is the fact that Panerai has gone small. For the first time ever, the brand has come out with a watch in a case size as small as 38mm. Seen in the latest Luminor Due timepieces, the brand hopes to cater to those who have always found Panerai’s pieces too large for their wrists.
To top the size reduction, the new Luminor Due pieces are available in such interesting palette. From the mint green leather in the Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic Acciaio to the blue fabric-stitched strap of the Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic Acciaio, there is indeed a lot more variety from the brand.
In addition to this, there’s also the Luminor Due 3 Days Automatic Oro Rosso that comes with a beautiful cool blue strap, white dial, and of course, a pink gold case. There’s another version that comes with a black dial and black leather strap, for those who prefer the more typical Panerai look. We can safely say that the brand that many consider to have an unwavering singular look, has certainly opened its doors to a new range of visual preferences, and hence a larger clientele.
What makes the Luminor 38mm watches particularly impressive is the fact that they house movements made within the Richemont Group that Panerai falls under. Seen in other Panerai releases as well, the Richemont movements are one of only two kinds of mechanisms Panerai now uses. This year marks Panerai’s complete independence from the acquisition of movements. They now run their watches either on Richemont-manufactured or completely in-house made mechanisms.
Another impressive series was the addition to the Heritage collection, including Radiomir watches in soothing, earthy tones. All these watches are designed based on vintage Panerai timepieces from the 1930s. Brown leather can be seen also in the new Luminor GMT watches, which are a slimmer, more refined version of its predecessors. This watch also comes in a captivating all-black model, in ceramic.
