May We Recommend

Since 1955, the Red Dot has become among the most sought-after distinctions for product design, as it represents quality in design that goes hand-in-hand with functional relevance. Recognising exceptional products across categories, the Red Dot rewards excellence in everything from furniture, interior design, technological gadgets and cars, to tools, home appliances, medical equipment and lifestyle products. Among these and many more—a total of 48 categories—are watches. Manufacturers and designers can enter their creations annually, and the rest is up to the jury. Comprising independent designers, professors and specialised journalists—not affiliated with or employed by anyone with whom there’d be a conflict of interest—the jury is truly objective vis-à-vis the evaluation and assessment of entries.

This year, there has been an interesting mix of Red Dot winners. This features Bulgari’s amazing achievement in slim watchmaking seen in the Octo Finissimo, TAG Heuer’s Luxury Kit that truly gives you the option of choosing between a smartwatch and automatic watch with a tourbillon complication, among others. Here’s a look at a few of the exceptional watches that the Red Dot jury handpicked among the global watch industry’s most functionally and aesthetically impressive designs of 2018.

Nomos Autobahn

From Nomos, the German watchmakers known for their strong design codes is the Autobahn series that made its debut this year. Drawing inspiration from the Autobahn freeways in Germany that are devoid of any mandated speed limit, the dial features a luminous design element that is reminiscent of speedometers. The dial itself has a concave structure—also seen in the small seconds sub-dial at six. Right below that is the date window that shows the current, previous and next dates. The 41mm steel case is fitted with the Nomos calibre DUW 6101. “With intelligent humour, this wristwatch is reminiscent of the design of early classical sports cars—successfully implemented using contemporary technology,” said the Red Dot jury in their statement on the Autobahn.

Junghans Max Bill Automatic

Also from a respected German watch manufacturer is this Junghans Max Bill Automatic watch. A true class act, this timepiece exemplifies the codes set by designer Max Bill, who drew heavily from the Bauhaus school of design. While the watch includes classic elements such as a sophisticated dial, with a minimalist look, certain subtle touches, such as the Arabic numerals and the minute markers on the outer part of the dial make this quite a modern piece. A soft shade of grey on the strap, the gold case and the domed glass complete the look of this contemporary classic. In their statement, the Red Dot jury has admired the Max Bill’s historical charm and high functionality.

MeisterSinger Salthora Meta X

The MeisterSinger Salthora Meta X, coming from another impressive Germany-based watch manufacturer, swayed one and all with its energetic and powerful looks. The juxtaposition of the ‘jumping hour’ and a rugged design showcased in this black-red version are a testament of the watchmaker’s technical prowess. The ‘jumping hour’ window at 12 o’clock—causing the new hour digit to jump into the window exactly every 60 minutes—is an innovative feature present in all Salthora models. The appeal of this horological speciality is accentuated by the double-digit instrument-like typography in the circumferential minute scales on the dial and the bezel. The face of this Swiss automatic timepiece also sports an archetypal single hand in a striking red hue. The rugged crown protector on the side of the face ensures water resistance up to 200m.
