Swiss watchmakers Perrelet have time and again proven that they dream to dare. After launching the in-house calibre P-321 in 2012, the brand reduced dependency on third-party suppliers and gained greater control over the design, manufacturing, and assembly processes. Numerous complications were built on the P-321, giving birth to two iconic watches; the Turbine Chrono and the Turbine Tourbillon. The Turbine Chrono was the brand’s first complicated Turbine watch, which marked a new chapter in Perrelet’s history. Moving onwards, the brand have developed a slick range of Turbine iterations inspired by the turbines of aircraft engines. Exclusive to Perrelet, these watches feature 12 blades that spin around a central axis when you move your wrist, giving them a fascinating look. Among their 2024 offerings, Perrelet decided to present another Turbine, reaffirming that luxury watchmaking can be technical yet playful. Inspired by the design of the Turbine EVO, the new Turbine ‘¡Viva México, Cabrones!’ preserves the design signatures of the Turbine range, such as the 41mm case crafted from grade-2 titanium blackened by DLC treatment.

As Exclusive As It Can Be: The Perrelet Turbine ‘¡Viva México, Cabrones!’

The latest Turbine timepiece commemorates Mexico’s rich history and its independence from Spain, a momentous event that took place in 1821. The Perrelet Turbine ‘¡Viva México, Cabrones!’ is an addition to the growing Turbine Mexico series, which already hosts the Turbine Mexico introduced in 2020, the Turbine Mexican Flag and Turbine Mexican Skull released in 2022, and the Turbine Carbon Mexico released last year.

Produced as a 50-piece limited edition, The Perrelet Turbine ‘¡Viva México, Cabrones!’ is designed to intrigue the audience and give off the impression that they are on a hunt for unique horological treasures. The phrase ¡Viva México, Cabrones!, meaning ‘Long Live, Mexico, b****rds’, originated during the Mexican Revolution in 1923 and is associated with the Mexican revolutionary leader Pancho Villa, expressing national pride and evoking defiant patriotism.

Oodles Of Mexican Flavour

Perrelet introduced the Turbine Mexico 2024 edition at the esteemed Salón Internacional Alta Relojería (SIAR) Summer Experience 2024 in Mexico City. SIAR is a prestigious watch show that plays a crucial role in advancing high-end watchmaking in Latin America. This 2024 edition houses the signature Turbine dial with one of the country’s most distinctive symbols—the national coat of arms in the colours of the national tricolour—green, white, and red, underlined with the inscription ‘¡Viva México, Cabrones!’ Additionally, the watch includes some usual characteristics of the range, such as the smooth bezel, the fluted sides of the case, caseback and the crown, and the brand logo ‘P’ engraved underneath the rubber strap and atop the crown.

Further enhancing the dial are the contrasting timekeeping elements such as the white delta hands with a luminescent coating, the white outer minute track, and the Arabic hour markers outlined in the same shade of red as the central seconds hand. The display and caseback are further protected by a sapphire crystal of the glass and caseback, with anti-reflective coating on inside and out. The compact watch promises up to 100m of water resistance and comes attached to a green rubber strap with a black DLC titanium pin buckle. Overall, the titanium-rubber construction makes the watch lightweight and a comfortable fit around the wrist.

The new Turbine ‘¡Viva México, Cabrones!’ finds its immense power in the in-house P-331-MH calibre. The automatic movement beats at a frequency of 28,800vph and offers a 42-hour power reserve. The movement, visible through the caseback, is as breathtaking as it is functional, courtesy the finishes for various elements, such as the circular-grained bridges and an openworked, brushed, and rhodium-plated oscillating weight.
