SpotlightPanerai Strengthens Its Connection To Its Roots And To Our Planet At SIHH 2019

Introducing a new Submersible range as a standalone pillar outside of the Luminor collection, Panerai strengthens its connection to its roots as a supplier of diver's watches to the Royal Italian Navy, while also making statement about pollution in the oceans, with a special Submersible made of recycled materials

May We Recommend

Of late, several watch manufacturers, especially the high-end brands that boast of illustrious pasts, have found it crucial to draw from their legacies, even with new products that present the latest innovations in watchmaking. This year at SIHH 2019, Panerai makes that clearer than ever, with a strategic and systematic streamlining of its core pillars. The Italian brand of Swiss-made watches declared that their four main collections going forward will be the Radiomir, the Luminor, the Luminor Due, and the Submersible. This is an interesting development for the brand that has kept everything largely under the Radiomir and Luminor collections alone, yet it shouldn’t come as a surprise.

The New Submersible Collection

Panerai’s original claim to fame was that they were the official suppliers of diver’s watches to the Royal Italian Navy, and establishing Submersible—which has essentially been their main series of diver’s watches—seems like a natural turn for them. Though one can rest assured that move isn’t radically changing the Submersible. Each new Submersible is still set in the cushion-shaped Luminor case with the signature crown protector.

The only drastic change is that the Luminor name no longer makes a presence on the dials of these new watches. The dials do have several new details to offer, such as the indexes in some models that aren’t just applied and luminous; they’re actually blocks of SuperLuminova instead for the best and longest-lasting luminosity that one can require while diving. Within this new Submersible range, there are now three distinctive sections—the core professional diver’s series, the Marina Militare series, and the Oceans-Saving eco-innovation watches.

Innovations In Materials And New Hues

A strong material used in the brand new standalone Submersible collection is carbotech. The really light and resistant carbon material is used in the cases and bezels of certain models to offer optimum resistance to magnetic fields, while also being structurally resilient and light.

SIHH 2019
To take that to another level is the BMG-Tech model, which is in a case built from a carbon material with an additional resistance to shock, while being lighter than steel, and even scratch-resistant

In colours, there’s this new stealth grey that we’ve already seen in the previously announced special edition Submersible in association with freediver Guillaume Néry. This new grey—also used in a basic new Submersible 3 Days. Inspired by the colours of the king of the seas—the shark—the dials in this hue even have a texture that echoes the inspiration, while adding nuance to the look.

The Oceans-Saving Eco-Titanium

The greatest and most admirable innovation from Panerai at this SIHH 2019 is undoubtedly the use of recycled materials in the creation of a special edition—the Eco-Titanium—which seeks to drive home a strong message about our oceans that need saving.

With a nylon strap woven from the plastic of three old bottles, this watch reminds us of the damage being done to the oceans that contain plastic waste, which poses a serious threat to marine life and a strong part of our Earth’s eco-system. To top that, even the titanium cases of these watches are made from recycled scrap metal.

This series is being launched in collaboration with explorer and adventurer Mike Horn, who has been a longstanding friend of the Panerai brand, and a strong advocate for our planet’s wellbeing. To make this launch even more special is the possibility of experiencing a bit of Mike Horn’s adventurous life. Owners of the Mike Horn special edition Submersible Eco-Titanium can have a chance of exploring the Svalbard Island—located north of Norway—with Horn, to discover the truly natural and untouched environment in the region.

The Panerai Experience

The experiences that Panerai has put together are even taken forward for some other new novelties. One such experience on offer comes with the black DLC-treated titanium Submersible Guillaume Néry chronograph watch.

Owners of this timepiece with an aqua-black gradient dial will have the chance to dive with Néry in Moorea, French Polynesia. With this and a few other experiences on offer, the brand has changed the Panerai experience quite literally.

With the new Submersible, a strong message about the environment, and introducing a true experiential side of Panerai, the brand’s 2019 highlights paint a vivid picture of what a luxury brand should be. We’re sure this impressive combination of quality products, enriching experiences and a strong voice for a cause will go a long way for Panerai.
