Round-UpOris Williams Watches: A Treat For Motor Racing Fans

In a world such as that of motor racing, where timing is everything, the collaboration between a motorsport team and makers of timekeeping instruments is only a natural marriage. Here’s a look at the association between the Williams’ Formula One team and Oris, and the Oris Williams collection of watches

Cars And Watches

The relationship between automobiles and watches goes way back, and it’s a relationship that just grows stronger and stronger with more marquee car and watch brands joining the bandwagon. There hasn’t been anything more exciting in the world of automobiles and racing than Formula One, with all its speed, thrills, glamour, and even its fair share of controversy. As they say, you may like F1 or dislike F1, but can’t ignore F1. With high-decibel campaigns surrounding the cars, drivers and the races, F1 is omnipresent, quite literally. But it’s not all drama and glamour; the sport also represents the highest level of technical excellence any machine can be driven to. Hence, when an F1 team partners with a brand, the relationship also depends on their shared philosophy of talent, technical prowess and success of the brand concerned. Like all high-profile marriages, many fail and new alliances are sought, almost every now and then.

Oris Williams
The association between motor racing and watches goes way back, and partnerships between Formula One personalities or teams and watch manufacturers have always been common. Seen here is the product of one such partnership – a watch from the Oris Willams collection, which is a product of Oris’ collaboration with the Williams F1 team.

Today, I am talking about a collaboration which dates back to 2003, and interestingly still going strong. Oris makes watches inspired by the dynamism of Williams’ F1 cars, and is represented in the F1 circuit by the young Canadian driver, Lance Stroll.

Formula One And Williams Racing

Williams Racing owes its success to the extraordinary man who founded it – Sir Frank Williams. Having started as a racing driver, he quickly moved on to the business side of the sport in 1969, with his own team. The team’s first F1 win came in Silverstone in 1979 and there was no stopping Williams. The team dominated F1 in the 80s and 90s, winning nine constructor’s championships and seven driver’s titles. The legendary drivers who have driven a Williams car are Clay Regazzoni, Keke Rosberg, Nigel Mansell, Alain Prost, Ayrton Senna, Mark Webber, and Nico Rosberg, to name a few. Despite a near fatal crash in France in 1986, Frank Williams continued to live with an indomitable spirit, and in 1999, was knighted for his contribution to motorsports. Oris considers Frank’s dedication, passion and commitment as the key reason to collaborate with the Williams Team as the Official Watch Partner, since 2003.

Oris Williams And Innovative Technology

At the heart of every successful F1 team is the use of innovative technology and avant-garde materials to deliver the best-designed racing cars capable of winning races on the very demanding racing tracks. Williams Cosworth FW07B and Williams-Renault FW14B are fine examples of the same, having brought enormous glory to the team.

The collaboration between the two companies paved the way for the launch of Oris’ first carbon fibre timepiece in 2016 – the ultra-light Oris Williams Valtteri Bottas Limited Edition. To achieve the same, the company developed and patented a manufacturing process derived from techniques used by the Williams team.

Oris Williams And Lance Stroll

Over the past few years, the partnership between the two brands has just grown stronger with the new Oris ambassador Lance Stroll doing a phenomenal job for the Williams team, including a podium finish in 2017. Stroll wears the Oris Williams Chronograph Carbon Fibre Extreme, which was a gift to him from the brand, presented to him during his visit to the Oris Manufacture in Hölstein in February last year.

The Oris Williams Motor Sport Collection

The association between Oris and Williams has led to the launch of a formidable Oris Motor Sports collection. I’ve selected five outstanding timepieces that represent the wide variety within the collection. Each watch from this family comes with a water resistance of 100m, sapphire crystal glass, and a two-year warranty.

The Oris Williams Chronograph incorporates a date display and tachymeter, in a larger case size, 44mm in diameter. A tachymeter is a useful function in racing watches, which helps to measure distance based on speed, and time tracked on the dial

This Oris Williams Chronograph features 10-minute and four-hour chronograph counters at 12 and six o’clock respectively, with a small seconds sub-dial at nine o’clock, and a date window at six

This one is called the Oris Williams Engine, Date, and it features a date in skeletonised dial in black, with an automatic movement, and the 42mm case and bracelet are in steel

A material that has grown increasingly popular among sport watches is rubber, and it is seen in the strap of this Oris Williams Day Date model in 42mm, with a black dial, matching the strap. Looks stunning, doesn’t it?

Most Oris Williams timepieces feature the ‘W’ of the Williams FI team somewhere on the dial, as seen here at six o’clock on the dial of this Day Date model with a rubber strap

Another day-date automatic model, this Oris Williams Day Date also features a black dial, but comes with a steel bracelet

Oris is a great brand, combining a legacy of genuine Swiss watchmaking with superior technical capabilities. The motorsport watches from Oris have all the elements that make a great sports watch, without making them too complicated. You can choose from a large variety of offerings in different dial colours, case sizes and straps, all the while wearing a watch that represents the same dedication, passion and commitment, combined with superior craftsmanship of two legendary brands – Oris and Williams. The icing on the cake – all these are at very reasonable prices.
