ReviewNot A Moonwatch, But Close Enough: The Omega Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite
With the stars in the moon phase display positioned exactly as they were when Apollo 11 reached the Moon, the moons made of Moon meteorite, and a dial made of iron meteorite, the new Omega Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite comes quite close, in theory, to the space timekeeper that the Moonwatch is

It’s not surprising that the moon phase is the only real complication in the Speedmaster collection other than the chronograph itself, considering the Speedy’s multiple trips to the moon. While not a part of the Professional Moonwatch series, the Speedmaster Moonphase is still quite a vast sub-series, with various materials and a wide palette. The latest additions to the line though—the new Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite watches—are probably the most special.

The Meteorite Of The Moonphase Meteorite
What immediately catches the eye is the texture on the dial. The ribbon-like flecks are unique in every piece, given that they naturally occur on meteorite. With meteorite dials in black PVD or galvanic grey, these two versions of the Moonphase meteorite come with black and blue ceramic bezels respectively, while the tachymeter scale is in white enamel in both.
Now it’s not uncommon for a dial to be made from meteorite. There are plenty of brands that have them, from Bovet to Frederique Constant. What makes the Omega Speedmaster Moonphase Meteorite exceptional is the Moon meteorite used for the moons of the moon phase display seen at six o’clock.
The Moon Phase Of Then Moonphase Meteorite
It’s a poetic touch indeed for the moon phase to feature genuine Moon meteorite. Further to that, adding visual depth and dimension to the display of the complication is the cabochon cut of the moons. They’re two in number for the moon phase as seen from the northern and the southern hemispheres. Further to that, there is another (indirect) nod to the moon on the Moonphase Meteorite.
The stars, which don’t really have any functional purpose, are arranged in the display exactly as they were seen when Apollo 11 landed on the Moon, as seen from Omega’s headquarters in Bienne, Switzerland. And as we know, it was Apollo 11 that made the Speedmaster Professional the Moonwatch—the collection’s biggest claim to fame, and acclaim. Surrounding this display are markings of the lunar month, which lasts for about 29.5 days.
The Sub-Dials Of The Moonphase Meteorite
Above the moon phase sub-dial at six o’clock, the chronograph, date and running seconds are seen in counters at three and nine o’clock. At three are the 60-minute and 12-hour chronograph counter, while the nine o’clock counter has an analogue date display, along with the running seconds.

The New Movement Of The Moonphase Meteorite
All the above functions and the timekeeping are powered by a brand-new movement, the manual-winding co-axial Master Chronometer calibre 9914, which offers a 60-hour power reserve. Radial Côtes de Genève and other finishing on the movement can be seen through the exhibition caseback in sapphire crystal.

Housed in a 43mm steel case, water-resistant to 50m, the Moonphase Meteorite features Speedmaster staples, including the ‘twisted’ lugs, the pump pushers of the chronograph and the Speedy bracelet. Such staples are what make any Speedmaster easily identifiable. And even though the Moonphase Meteorite is not a Moonwatch, the meteorite and the moon and the stars make it feel right at home within the collection.
