ReviewIn Apple Style: Omega’s Latest Seamaster Diver 300M

With mesh bracelets, as seen on the ‘No Time to Die’ edition, the latest Omega Seamaster Diver 300M models have a similarity to Apple’s iPhone, in terms of materials. Find out how, and more about this new generation of the iconic dive watches from Omega

What struck me instantly about the 2024 Seamaster Diver 300M, apart from the slinky mesh bracelet of course, was the use of materials and how that separates the black version from the grey. At first glance, it seems to be only about colour. However, once you explore the details further, you’d find that the black one has an aluminium bezel and an aluminium dial; while the grey version is fitted with a bezel in titanium and a dial made of steel. How could one not think of the iPhone!

The last few editions of the popular smartphone have presented a material distinction quite like this. The regular iPhone has been in aluminium, while the iPhone Pro has been in titanium lately, and in steel before that. Though this is where the similarities end. Unlike the iPhone and iPhone Pro, both the black and grey 2024 Seamaster Diver 300M models are priced the same, have a steel case and bracelet, and a standard size of 42mm. Of course, the water resistance is in the name of the series itself. All these details stay true to this iconic series, which goes back to 1993. Not too long after that, it came into the league of the most recognised and known dive watches out there, such as the Rolex Oyster Perpetual Submariner, and Blancpain’s Fifty Fathoms.

A Sneak Peek Of The 2024 Seamaster Diver 300M

In 1995, the Seamaster Diver 300M also became the official watch of the best-known fictional spy, James Bond, making its debut along with actor Pierce Brosnan, in his first 007 outing, Goldeneye. After four films with Brosnan, this Seamaster icon went on to be seen on the wrist of the next Bond, actor Daniel Craig in Casino Royale (2006). For the watch in Craig’s final James Bond film, No Time to Die (2021), Omega chose titanium. However, what really stood out, visually, was the mesh bracelet that piqued the interest of many. And then, earlier this year, at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, Craig was spotted wearing one of these brand-new Seamasters, which had not been launched yet. It seemed like Omega were teasing fans, but that didn’t last too long. Just months later, they have come out with basically two new watches, each with the coveted mesh bracelet in steel or with a regular Seamaster rubber strap, making that a total of four new references.

Changes In The 2024 Seamaster Diver 300M

It could appear that nothing is quite so different in the 2024 Seamaster Diver 300M, apart from the mesh bracelet. One thing I noticed was the missing date window at six o’clock, which had moved from three o’clock, with the Master Chronometer upgrade that the Diver 300 got in 2018. Apart from omitting the date in this edition, other differences include the bezel materials mentioned earlier. Ceramic from the previous models has made way for bezels in aluminium and titanium. The titanium one, in fact, features a grained finishing that was earlier seen on the Moonshine gold bezel of the first Paris 2024 edition, which was unveiled to start a one-year countdown to the most recent Olympics. Another detail that is different is the stark contrast or monochromatic look, as the earlier models had subtle red accents even in neutral-toned variants.

The rest is pretty much the same as in previous models—the wave pattern on the dial, the skeletonised hands, the big circular and rectangular hour markers, the domed sapphire crystal glass, the helium escape valve, and so on. As we all know, to remain iconic and recognisable, you can’t change too much too soon. There has to be gradual evolution, as is the case with a certain smartphone. Okay, that’s another similarity with the iPhone. That’s it though. The 2024 Seamaster Diver 300M is just the right step forward for the collection. I do hope they eventually come out with versions that are fitted with the classic Seamaster bracelet as well.

The Mesh Bracelet On The Titanium-Bronze Gold Edition

Not long after the Seamaster Diver 300M was released with a mesh bracelet, Omega unveiled a titanium edition too. It’s closer in nature to the No Time to Die edition, owing to the use of lightweight titanium. In contrast, the bezel, crown and helium escape valve are in Bronze Gold. Its soft pink gold appearance will remain the same natural-patina hue over time, as this special alloy was created for that purpose, and it will not turn green due to oxidation. Additionally, it is also nickel-free, and hence a hyoallergenic material. The same tone is seen on the hands and hour markers on the dial in green, which is seen on the rubber strap, whgich this watch also comes with instead of the titanium mesh bracelet.
