When going through the options available in watches from high-end brands, it’s often confusing to see the range of features available. Although many premium brands have achieved success with creating timepieces that can withstand extreme conditions or have high-tech features like a depth gauge or an advanced chronograph, these features may not necessarily be of any use to you. Sometimes you just want a good watch that simply tells the time accurately, isn’t loaded with tonnes of features, but still runs on a reliable automatic movement. You’d surely want this timepiece to also look good on your wrist – a watch that you can perhaps wear daily, to work. For this, we present the Nomos At Work series.
Avant-Garde Design Meets Technical Finesse At Work
Nomos Glashütte is among the few non-Swiss watch manufacturers that give Swiss watchmaking stiff competition. The German brand, based in Glashütte – arguably the German capital of watchmaking – is known for its avant-garde designs that still have a classical charm, and hence appeal to a wide range of aesthetic tastes. At the same time, the watches they produce aren’t lacking on the technical front either.
Housing some of the most accurate and reliable in-house mechanical movements, the timepieces even house components that are made by the brand themselves. So much so that certain components in their watches – like the escapement, which even most Swiss watch brands outsource – are often made in-house at the Nomos’ manufactory. Uwe Ahrendt, the CEO of Nomos affirms, “Buying a Nomos watch is an investment in lasting values – in something that stands the test of time.”
Nomos Gets To Work
Functional, yet advanced, simple, yet sophisticated, like most of the other offerings from Nomos Glashütte, is the new At Work range, which the brand says are ‘particularly suitable for the office’. And we agree. These products are for those who spend most of their waking hours at work, or doing business, rather than spending their time yachting or manoeuvring a plane. Any piece from the At Work line is not a ‘professional watch’ – a strict industry term reserved for timepieces with high-tech features – but it is certainly a watch for working professionals.
The Movement At Work
The technical prowess of these new Nomos watches can be seen through their sapphire crystal casebacks. The movement at the heart of this range is the Nomos automatic calibre DUW 3001, which is astoundingly just 3.2mm thick, making the watches slim. This adds to their minimal look, complementing the refined appearance.
The movement at work also includes the Nomos swing system escapement that has been one of the German watchmakers’ greatest accomplishments in recent times. Among its components are 27 jewels. The mechanism offers a power reserve of 48 hours – more than enough for an everyday watch.
An Ideal Case For Work
The stainless steel case housing the Nomos movement is 38.5mm in diameter, with a height of 8.35mm. The bipartite sapphire crystal caseback works well with the domed sapphire crystal watch glass. Weighing a comfortable 52g, the entire structure is water resistant to 50m, just in case you forget to take the watch off before jumping into the shower, in a rush to get to work.
The strap is attached to the case with quick-change spring bar lugs that are 19mm wide. The black leather of the strap is Horween Genuine Shell Cordovan – a high standard of tanning – and features the remborde or full-wraparound construction.
The Metro Neomatik 39 At Work
This is a ‘Nomos bestseller’. With a white dial, its design remains timeless and classic. The galvanised, white silver-plated grey indexes at three, nine and twelve o’clock ensure that it also has a very cosmopolitan appearance. The hour and minute hands in oxidised black offer good readability against the white dial, as does the red small second’s hand on the sub-dial at six o’clock.
The Metro Neomatik 39 Silvercut At Work
In February 2018, The Metro Neomatik 39 Silvercut won Nomos its seventh iF Design Award, an honour for outstanding achievement in design – the most respected prizes in the industry.
The largest of the Metro watch from Nomos, the At Work Metro watches are available in various dial options, including this silver-grey, which is very urban and contemporary in its appeal. Offset against the rhodium-plated, brushed-finish of the dial are the three striking red markers that match the small second’s hand, and probably even that lipstick on your collar!
The Metro Neomatik 39 Midnight Blue At Work
…And after! This version, with its midnight blue dial, can go with your navy suit or Friday casuals, as well as be your accessory for drinks with colleagues after work. While the small second’s hand is in neon orange in this one, the silver indexes complement the rhodium-plated hour and minute hands.
Technically sound, with superior materials, and yet aesthetically stunning, presenting a design that could go with most work-wear ensembles, an At Work watch would certainly be a good choice.
