Embodying idiosyncrasy and minimalist design, German watchmaker Nomos Glashütte has launched a few show-stealers at Baselworld 2018. In collaboration with German designer Werner Aisslinger, this relatively young brand unveiled the Autobahn collection, named after the German highway system that is devoid of a mandated speed limit. Available in three dial colours (white silver-plated, sports gray and midnight blue), it is hugely inspired from race tracks and automotive analogue dash counters, as is indicated by the curved rehaut in the centre of the watch.
Retaining their emblematic aesthetics while introducing a sense of motion and bold curves, this new collection is equipped with a new in-house built date calibre DUW 6101. Featuring a three-lane date window that is reminiscent of an odometer, the 41mm robust stainless-steel case houses a well-proportioned dial with a recessed small seconds subdial at six o’clock. Another discernible driving-related element on the dial is a large ring from eight o’clock to four o’clock that neatly symbolises a speedometer. The luminous ring of large superluminova fields on its dial is another racy feature of this dramatic collection. All Autobahn timepieces have a textile strap with stainless steel pin buckle.

Nomos unveiled three new neomatik date movement watches to extend its existing Tangente, Orion, and Ludwig model families. These trendsetting and straightforward watches feature round cases and represent the principles of form follows function – a design tenet that Nomos staunchly swears by. Targeted towards the traditionalists of today, these new neomatiks redefine ‘classic’ and serve as gorgeous additions to the Nomos brand, which has been garnering awards for its eccentric yet polished design palate.

Next in line are the series of watchmaking delicacies, the Petit Fours, which are evocative of the bite-sized sweet treats. Taking their classic Tetra models a notch ahead, this new series by Nomos includes four versions: Azure, Pearl, Grenadine and Matcha. These thin square beauties featuring double lugs are powered by the hand-wound calibre Alpha, which is the most produced movement in the Glashütte workshops. Apart from being an eye-candy, each Petit Four timepiece ensures precision and style.

The year 2018 marks the centennial anniversary of the United Kingdom’s Royal Air Force (RAF). To commemorate this historic milestone, AVI-8 has launched the Flyboy Centenary watches (AV-4058 and AV-4059). Each new model in this collection depicts momentous decades – 1920s, 1940s, 1960s, and 1980s – the golden years of the RAF. Another celebratory element is the conical-shaped crown with the Royal Air Force roundel stamped on the top.

The Hawker Harrier II is another aviation-themed watch, which focusses its design around the legendary jet’s engine. Featuring a Japanese-made chronograph retrograde movement, this watch exhibits its aeronautical DNA via the sword-shaped hour and minute hands and the arrow-shaped bi-colour chronograph seconds hand. This new AVI-8 collection, which comes in blue, green or grey editions, is a perfect blend of aggressive styling and additional functionality.
