SpotlightQuartz Accuracy, Mechanical Reliability: The Nivada Grenchen Chronoking Mecaquartz Salmon

The new 38mm Nivada Grenchen Chronoking Mecaquartz Salmon is a steel watch that is powered by a part quartz part mechanical hybrid movement

May We Recommend

Established in the mid-1920s, Nivada Grenchen receded into history as an obscure watchmaker after the Quartz Crisis ambushed the mechanical watchmaking industry in the 1970s. The pre-quartz era witnessed the brand’s penchant for producing watches for daily use that promised quality and durability. With such a name and fame, it was unfair for Nivada Grenchen to be lost in time. In 2018, watchmaking entrepreneur Guillaume Laidet breathed new life into the dormant brand. The watchmaker revived several of their iconic models, like the Chronomaster, Antarctica, Depthmaster, and Datomaster. Launched in 2022, the Datomaster became Nivada Grenchen’s first mecaquartz watch that combined the precision of a quartz movement with the reliability of a self-winding mechanical engine, adding to the Chronomaster collection that hosts the ingenious Chronoking Mecaquartz series. After releasing the Chronoking Mecaquartz Black and Chronoking Mecaquartz Paul Newman Orange versions in 2023, the brand this year has added another spectacular watch to the lineup—the Chronoking Mecaquartz Salmon Dial. The latest Chronoking watch features a salmon-hued sunburst dial that makes for a beautiful sport-chic, purpose-driven watch.

Panache With Peach: The Nivada Grenchen Chronoking Mecaquartz Salmon Dial

The Chronoking Mecaquartz Salmon Dial is the latest watch to join the highly functional Chronomaster collection by Nivada Grenchen. Its sunburst rose dial radiates a gentle warmth, reminiscent of Nivada Grenchen’s past successes with the Antarctic Spider Salmon Date and No Date watches. With its subtle nod to the Pantone Colour of the Year 2024 Peach Fuzz, this latest offering merges modernity with a vintage vibe. This timepiece is also a fitting example of when the past meets the present, as it combines the design codes of chrono watches from the 70s with modern aesthetics to deliver a charming vintage-style watch. Its tan sub-dials with the famous art deco-style ‘Newman’ typography for the sub-counters offer a delicate contrast when met with the white markings on the minute track. To give more depth to the watch face, Nivada Grenchen have used white SuperLumiNova markers, along with the white chronograph seconds hand.

A Hybrid Harmony Of The Mecaquartz Movement

The Nivada Grenchen Chronoking Mecaquartz Salmon Dial is powered by the Seiko TMI VK63 mecaquartz movement. Inventive in its approach, the engine is a combination of quartz and self-winding mechanical movements, offering the best of both worlds. While the quartz module helps with timekeeping, the mechanical component is used for chronograph functions.
