ReviewH. Moser & Cie. Venturer Concept Vantablack: The Time-Telling Void

An Overview

The Venturer Concept Vantablack is one of the most arresting timepieces crafted by H. Moser & Cie.—a brand that can trace its legacy as far back as the early 1800s—and it’s a watch that takes minimalism to the blackest and most dramatic of depths. A dress watch that truly has no peer, the Venturer Concept Vantablack—as is obvious from its name—uses the Vantablack material (‘VANTA’ is short for ‘vertically aligned carbon nanotube arrays’), which absorbs up to 99.96 percent of visible light. This makes it one of the darkest known substances known to humankind today.

Vantablack is majorly used in the aerospace and defence sectors. So what does H. Moser & Cie. have up its sleeve with this watch? With the use of this material, the Swiss watch manufacturers set out to do something a little different—melding the worlds of innovative design and ultramodern technology—and make this watch more distinctive. And they have truly succeeded. As the brand’s CEO, Edouard Meylan, told The Watch Guide in an interview, “It’s the blackest black on earth. Put it next to anything black, and you’ll see that the contrast is incredible. And the human brain cannot capture the density of the Vantablack. It sees everything as a two-dimensional. It’s very complicated to create, that’s why we produce just about 25 to 30 Vantablack watches per year. As we continue with fumé dials, the Vantablack has given us another opportunity to have something unique. And we’re constantly looking for more.”

This timepiece is absolutely one of the most attention- (and light-) grabbing timepieces from Moser’s repertoire. If you want all eyes on your wrist, the H. Moser & Cie. Venturer Concept Vantablack is the way to go.

Impressions

All fashion-forward individuals swear by one important rule—that black simply never goes out of style. And this H. Moser & Cie. timepiece proves just that. The Vantablack dial is akin to a black hole that captures every ray of light as well as your imagination. The minimalist, clean design is bound to catch the eye of horologists who believe that less is more. It’s riveting, it’s distracting and, most importantly, it’s one of the most simply designed watches out there—and that’s what makes it special.

A Timeless Design

The darkest dial: The H. Moser & Cie. Venturer Concept Vantablack’s dial is most definitely its highlight. Moser here uses the innovative Vantablack material in the most ingenious of ways—the dial has been given a Vantablack finishing, making it the blackest of black dials you will ever see donned on any wrist. This timepiece’s dial is devoid of everything else, including the indices and the brand emblem. With only timekeeping hands seen on the dial, this is the purest expression of minimalist, elegant design if there ever was one.

The case: The 39mm, 18-karat red gold case truly brings out the deep black of the dial. The gold of the case contrasts brilliantly with the Vantablack dial, and gives the watch a truly timeless appeal, along with a dash of luxe and sophistication.

Strap it on: A hand-stitched black alligator leather strap, with an 18-karat red gold pin buckle emblazoned with the distinctive Moser logo, enhances the timepiece’s restrained appeal.

The movement within: Beating inside at 18,000vph is the HMC 327 hand-wound manufacture calibre, offering a minimum power reserve of three days. A sapphire crystal exhibition caseback gives one a glimpse of the calibre. Interestingly, the power reserve is not indicated on the dial in order to not take away from the captivating blackness. It is the movement side that indicates the power remaining.
