ReviewThe Superior Chronograph: Carl F. Bucherer’s Manero Flyback

Take a look at what makes the Carl F. Bucherer Manero Flyback the superior chronograph watch that not only offers a sporty feature that was traditionally used only by the likes of professional race car drivers, but is also a perfectly sophisticated dress watch

May We Recommend

The Carl F. Bucherer Manero collection has presented the brand’s most diverse offerings, right from a moon phase complication to a perpetual calendar and even a tourbillon. Among them is the highly regarded classic column wheel flyback chronograph, which may look like any other chronograph, but is certainly superior in functionality. We present, the Carl F. Bucherer Manero Flyback.

The Manero Flyback Chronograph is powered by an in-house movement, developed over years to offer with perfection the flyback functionality of the chronograph complication

How A Flyback Chronograph Works

In regular chronograph watches, restarting the chronograph involves two steps—one push to reset it, and a second to restart the counter. A flyback feature can, however, reset and restart the chronograph with just one press of a button. For a long time, this complication was exclusive to pilots and professional race car drivers, owing to the ease of timing a succession of elapsed times. Carl F. Bucherer had never attempted this mechanism before in any of their watches, and spent years developing it in an in-house movement. And the result of this labour is an extremely superior flyback chronograph—the Manero Flyback.

Flyback
The Flyback Chronograph complication was exclusive to pilots and professional race drivers for many years as it helped them to time successive events without having to reset their watch. Now it’s a complication used even in sophisticated timepieces such as the Manero Flyback.

The Flyback Comes To Carl F. Bucherer’s Manero

The Lucerne-based brand is an extension of its founder’s vision. Carl Friedrich Bucherer was a visionary who created timepieces that moved with the times. Always combining extravagance and aesthetic appeal in extraordinary ways, Bucherer’s journey began in 1888, when he opened a jewellery and watch store in Lucerne, and his name rapidly became a synonym for quality and originality. His legacy was taken forward by his two sons—one a watchmaker, and the other, a goldsmith. The rest, as they say, is history.

The Watch Guide

Carl F. Bucherer wanted to pay homage to the early days of auto racing and at the same time create a stunning dress chronograph with the new Manero Flyback

The Watch Guide

A flyback chronograph has the ability to time a second interval even when the chronograph hands are still running, simply by pressing the reset button at four o’clock

The Watch Guide

The sub-dials combine well with the classic inner-bezel tachymeter scale, underlining the three-dimensional quality of the dial design

A major part of the brand’s vision as it evolved was the idea of the Manero, which was to pay homage to the early days of auto racing in the most sophisticated way possible. And what better way to do that than by introducing in the collection their first ever flyback movement.

The Watch Guide

From a classical black and gold, to this sportier version, the Manero Flyback offers quite a diverse range

The dial on this edition, with details in red and an inverse-Panda colouring of the bi-compax layout, gives this piece a sporty look, and added charm

The new Manero Flyback is equipped with their in-house calibre CFB 1970—a flyback chronograph that has the ability to time a second interval even when the chronograph hands are still running, simply by pressing the reset button at four o’clock.

The Carl F. Bucherer Manero Flyback in gold and brown leather is a versatile piece that can even complement ensembles in different hues

But that’s not the only area where this movement excels. The calibre CFB 1970 is also an extremely accurate mechanism. Incorporating 25 jewels, it operates at a frequency of 28,800vph, offering a significant power reserve of 42 hours.

As sophisticated as this version looks, it goes just as well with a casual look as any other sporty watch could

The Classic And Luxurious Face Of The Flyback

All of this is done on a splendid canvas, available in silver, black, champagne, or grey, with triangular applied indexes in gold or stainless steel. The dial is an exhibition of Carl F. Bucherer’s obsession with depth and detail, with elements such as the sub-dials, applied indexes and even the brand’s emblem matching the case material—either stainless steel or 18-karat rose gold.

Although celebrating a chronograph complication traditionally used by the likes of race car drivers, the Manero Flyback is actually a perfect dress watch for a sophisticated gentleman

The detailing on the dial reflects the craftsmanship that goes into making the Manero Flyback. A closer look at the dial will reveal the concentric circles etched on the sub-dials, lending textural splendour to the overall visual appeal.

Crafted out of 18-karat rose gold or stainless steel, these hands are complemented by the smaller sub-dial hands as well. In keeping with the symmetry of the dial, a black-on-white date display is seen through an aperture at six o’clock.

Who knew gold and tan would even go well with grey and white!

The Streamlined Build Of The Flyback

The case of the Manero Flyback presents true visual harmony with the dial. The build of the Flyback is slightly on the larger side, measuring 43mm in diameter and 14.45mm in thickness. However, the design is streamlined, and also includes curved lugs that make the timepiece sit comfortably even on smaller wrists.

Adding to the impressive structure of the Manero Flyback is the domed sapphire crystal glass, a staple of the Manero collection, which adds dimension and a layered visual appeal.

Despite its large size, the Manero Flyback sits rather comfortably on most wrists, owing to its curved lugs

The polished push buttons of the chronograph add to the classic character of the watch, while being highly functional with their large surface area. Adorning the case is the signature Carl F. Bucherer crown, marked with the brand’s monogram.

It features an oscillating mass decorated with the Côtes de Genève pattern, making the view through the caseback a treat in itself.
