May We Recommend
Owning a piece of history—a prized collection of philately, a rare painting, heirloom jewellery, or even a classic watch—that has journeyed through time and generations of admiration only brings back memories that remain utterly cherished, and hence rare and exclusive. Riding on this esteemed sentiment, Jaeger-LeCoultre gives its passionate watch lovers a reason to swell with pride by reviving its own glorious past, through the Polaris collection, with unmistakable flair. The new 2018 Polaris collection, unveiled at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie 2018 in Geneva, traces its roots to the legendary Memovox Polaris timepiece with a built-in alarm feature, from 1968. A path-breaking innovation that was well ahead of its time, the Memovox has since then been a strong icon for the brand and has undergone numerous expansions over the years.
Where Sophisticated Meets Sporty
With 2018 marking the Memovox’s 50th anniversary, it was only a befitting occasion to pay tribute to this legendary icon. With five impressive models taking pride of place in this collection, including one limited edition piece, which is almost a re-edition of the original 1968 Memovox Polaris. With these five models, Jaeger-LeCoultre brings back timeless watchmaking housed in au courant versions, replete with a variety of complications and finishes. There are a pair of three-hand models (one with a date, and one without), a Polaris chronograph, a world-timer, and a limited-edition alarm variant to carry the torch for the original watch that inspired the collection. Not hiding its iconic vintage roots, the new timepieces are the perfect arm candy for the modern multitasking man, perfected with technology and honed with watchmaking crafts to keep up with his active lifestyle.
In keeping with the times, Jaeger-LeCoultre ensures that the repertoire feels complete by adding the worthy and coveted world-timer to this collection. A classic sporty world-timer, the Polaris Chronograph WT combines the chronograph feature with a very functional world time display. While most world-timers can be a task to read, this one, sized at a generous 44mm, is all you need for enhanced, clear readability of the cities. The upsized dial, however, is offset by its thickness—12.5mm—which makes it easy to wear and the use of titanium makes it pleasantly light and comfortable on the wrist.
In a striking ocean blue or black, with differentiated sunray, grained and opaline finishes, the dial features a bi-compax layout with a 30-minute counter at three o’clock and a 12-hour counter at nine. This piece truly exemplifies the marriage of traditional watchmaking with sporty functionality. The true excellence lies in the world time function. The external cities ring is controlled by the crown at 10 o’clock. It shows the conventional 24 time zones, with lines and triangle pointers indicating summer time in the respective cities. Inside this ring, the 24-hour ring then enables you to immediately see the time in any other time zone. All this is powered by an in-house, self-winding mechanical movement, the Jaeger-LeCoultre calibre 752, which offers an impressive power reserve of 65 hours.
For a globe-trotting watch connoisseur’s easy understanding, the watch features the numeral 24, the tip on the chronograph hand, and the city of London—the reference for universal time—all in red. With white luminescent hour markers and a suave brown leather strap for added comfort, there’s more than enough for this watch to become your essential travel and even everyday companion.
