The newest iterations of the vintage-inspired Art Déco collection are crafted with aesthetically pleasing round dials, giving the watches a more antiquated appeal than ever before

An Overview

A luxury watchmaker that has always had a fondness for a subtle design language and unsurpassable efficiency, Frederique Constant is constantly innovating and evolving to meet horological needs. A great example of this is their Horological Smartwatch that melds the worlds of technology and traditional timekeeping. The Art Déco collection, first launched in 2017, was inspired by the aesthetic of the 1940s. Two years later, the brand released another collection under the famed Art Déco banner, taking inspiration from the luxurious yet classical designs of the 1920s. This coveted collection of elegant women’s watches now has a third iteration—this time, the timepieces are housed in charming round cases, reminiscent of the watches that were all the rage in the early 1900s. Blending an antiquated design language with modern reliability, the Art Déco collection is a reflection of the modern woman—exuding elegance, boldness and femininity.

Impressions

The Art Deco movement, which originated in the 1910s, exemplified opulent, modern designs, with clean lines and an evocative, streamlined aesthetic. The eponymous collection from Frederique Constant embodies these very virtues through five classic watches that will appeal to those who look to the past for inspiration. Vintage-inspired watches have this timeless appeal that just can’t be emulated by timepieces that have more contemporary designs—and this is exactly why the Frederique Constant Art Déco collection has captured imaginations. Radiating effortless elegance, these watches are in the realm of affordable luxury, a hallmark of the brand, which ensures that 100 percent Swiss-made watches can be enjoyed by more and more people.

The amber sapphire is a luxurious touch to this otherwise simplistic yet glamorous timepiece

The perfectly symmetrical round, mother-of-pearl dial is extremely pleasing to the eye, and the guilloche finish at its centre is a testament to superior craftsmanship. The elegant Roman numerals not only make the dial legible but add more character to these already striking timepieces. The stainless steel bracelet—especially the bicoloured version with its rose gold-plated links—is minimalist and sophisticated. Two variants of the collection are fashioned with beautiful navy blue satin straps, which look extraordinary next to the gleaming white or blue dials that these timepieces offer. The essence of these watches is to create something that is luxurious and glamorous, without compromising on utility and function. Whether you don it at work or at a gala, these watches are sure to make a statement.

The 2020 Art Déco

The case

The movement of this watch is housed in a round-shaped polished stainless steel case that has a diameter of 30mm, which ensures that it fits snugly on even the most petite wrists. One member of the collection has a case boasting a dual-toned design, with stainless steel and rose gold interplaying magically to create a true stunner. Convex sapphire crystal protects the movement encased within. Another subtle yet delightful design element is the intricately fluted case band. The crown is embellished with a blue or amber sapphire, which adds a touch of glamour. Interestingly, the casing of the watch has been slightly curved to fit the contour of the wrist with ease. If one were to nit-pick, the only downside is that the timepieces are water resistant only up to 30m, so it can only withstand splashes of water.

The Roman numerals of this particular member have been rendered in white so that they are clearly legible against the stunning blue mother-of-pearl dial

Strap it on

These watches come fashioned with stainless steel bracelets. One member’s bracelet has an eye-catching dual-tone—in steel with rose gold-plated elements—wonderfully complementing the colour of the watch’s case. Two ethereally beautiful variants come attached with a navy blue satin strap that’s alluring as well as comfortable. Adding a touch of vintage razzmatazz to the fabric strap are the diamonds set on the delicate lugs, nine in number.

The dial stands out

A design that harks back to the early 1900s, the Art Déco collection says sophistication without screaming it. The watches sport mother-of-pearl dials, either in stark white or a gorgeous navy blue hue, with guilloche decoration at the centre. Roman numerals, painted either black or white, give the watches a purely vintage look. The variant with the blue satin strap and white dial is the only watch that has been imbued with Roman numerals in blue, perfectly matching the hue of the strap—ensuring the timepiece looks incredibly eye-catching, even to those with the most discerning of tastes. Hand-polished Breguet-shaped (or cored apple) hands, in either a black or silver tone, make it easy for one to read the time.

A reliable movement

While its appeal might be vintage, harking back to an era gone by, the inner mechanics of these watches are resolutely modern. The hour and minute hands are powered by the FC-200 quartz movement with four jewels, which has a battery life of a whopping six years.

The Past Of The Art Déco

The collection that was released in 2019 had taken its design cues from the roaring 1920s. The oval mother-of-pearl dial in these watches—perfect for dainty wrists—has the same guilloche finish at its centre. These timepieces sport Roman numerals at three, six, nine and 12 o’clock, along with the diamond hour markers that give them a look of boundless luxury. The stainless steel bracelets add a touch of sophistication and graceful elegance.
