SpotlightDress Watch Trends From The Emmys 2017

Take a look at the strongest trends that emerged, as we recommend how you can incorporate them into your watch wardrobe

May We Recommend

The red carpet at any awards show always highlights a few strong trends, whether they are current, emerging, or are (occasionally) those that have barely even made to trend forecasts yet. For instance, a few years ago, at the Oscars in 2014, the conventional black tuxedos made way for white dinner jackets. An emerging trend then, these became quite popular and were seen even at this year’s Emmys, as sported by Black-ish star and Emmy nominee, Anthony Anderson, and three-time Emmy winner Jeremy Piven. Other big trends observed at the Emmys 2017 were shorter, above-the-ankle evening gowns for women. This was a look perfected by Elisabeth Moss, and Nicole Kidman, both of whom won Emmys, for The Handmaid’s Tale and Big Little Lies, respectively.

Watches At The Emmys 2017

When it came to watches, for a black-tie event such as the Emmys, there’s no surprise that there were several white metal timepieces with black leather straps. However, there was something more to the timepieces seen. For instance, This Is Us star and Emmy nominee, Milo Ventimiglia wore a fuller Tiffany & Co. watch that featured a chronograph. On the other hand, Transparent star and two-time Emmy winner, Jeffrey Tambor chose a Montblanc 4810 Dual Time, featuring additional counters on the dial. The most impressive watches on the red carpet, and on that Emmys stage, however, were those that either reflected additional detailing, a striking element, or a hark back to a classic or vintage look.

These were the strongest trends in dress watches that emerged from the Emmys.

The Classic Gold Watch

Alexander Skarsgård’s bold choice of an all-gold watch paid off, as the Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra went perfectly with that gold Emmy statuette

Gold can never go out of style. It’s always a good investment, and not just for its returns. The all-gold watch is a vintage style that has never gone away completely. It’s just that many aren’t confident enough to take on the gold. That was not the case with Alexander Skarsgård, who chose to wear an Omega Seamaster Aqua Terra timepiece in yellow gold, with a yellow gold bracelet as well. His bold choice paid off, as it went perfectly with that gold Emmy statuette, which he won for his supporting role in the limited series Big Little Lies. Even if you’re not winning an award, a gold watch would lend an air of confidence to anyone. So if you’ve never had a gold watch, you should definitely invest in one now.

A gold watch is a must-have, but if you’re hesitant to go for an all-gold timepiece, try the Omega Speedmaster ’57, which balances the gold with a silvery white dial

The Watch Guide recommends: The Omega Speedmaster ’57 Omega Co-Axial Chronograph. If you’re a little hesitant to go all-gold, this is the perfect watch for you, given the relief it offers with its silvery white dial. Yet, it maintains a sophisticated look, with the classic, white-and-gold combination. From one of Omega’s most iconic collections, which was a part of all six lunar missions, the watch also reflects an impressive legacy. It’s a watch that you’d be proud to have on your wrist. Inspired by the design of the original Speedmaster from 1957, this watch comes in a 41.5mm case with a transparent caseback, and houses the Omega Co-Axial calibre 9301 with a chronograph function. The dial features a small seconds counter at nine o’clock. It also has a 12-hour and 60-minute chronograph recorder on the sub-dial at 3 o’clock, as well as a date window at 6 o’clock. This watch would obviously go perfectly with a black-tie look, like Skarsgård’s. However, it could also be used to jazz up a more casual outfit for a night out on the town.

The Watch With A Striking Feature

Finer details and striking features are what Matt Bomer was going for with his Ballon Bleu De Cartier watch

This is a look that’ll go with gold, or even the more subtle steel, or platinum. An element on the dial or on the case that catches one’s eye is always an interesting look to don. And it’s oftentimes a conversation starter that can make you quite popular in a crowd, if you’re not already the life of the party that is. Matt Bomer is certainly that person. The Emmy-nominated actor has been known for his dapper persona, since he hit stardom with his leading role on the crime show, White Collar. Bomer chose to wear a tuxedo with subtle detailing, but the most striking factor of his ensemble was his Cartier watch that peeked through his cuff on the red carpet. The crown of his Ballon Bleu was distinctly visible and made a nuanced presence in his look. The Ballon Bleu De Cartier collection of timepieces is one of the brand’s signature lines, and offers a wearer an unmistakable edge, which is exactly the trend we’re talking about here.

A striking feature, such as the Ballon Bleu De Cartier crown, is sure to make your watch a statement piece in your ensemble

The Watch Guide recommends: The Cartier Ballon Bleu De Cartier 46mm in white gold. This is one of the most impressive timepieces in this range of Cartier watches. Housed in the white gold case is a manual-winding movement, which even includes a tourbillon – a complication that is often considered the most complex and advanced in watchmaking. The case also features the signature Ballon Bleu crown. Matching the crown are the blued hour and minute hands. The grey dial is layered, with the ‘skeletonised’ upper layer featuring hour markers as Roman numerals and indexes. The generous size of this watch could easily become the statement piece in your ensemble for you to make a striking impression.

The Minimal Look With A Twist

Pair a classic dress watch in white gold with a black leather strap, with even a coloured jacket, just like This Is Us star Justin Hartley did with his Montblanc Heritage Spirit Date Automatic

You can’t go wrong with the classic dress watch—a circular dial in a white metal case, with a black leather strap. This will probably complement a black suit better than any other watch could. But a black suit or tux isn’t all that it’ll go with. The classic, minimal look of this style will make it a good companion for any formal ensemble, just as long as there’s some black in it, ideally in the form of a black leather belt or shoes. This is how This Is Us star Justin Hartley made it work wonders even with a midnight blue tuxedo jacket at the Emmys. He wore a Montblanc Heritage Spirit Date Automatic. Now you could either take the style as it is, or you could add just another touch of character and craft, in the form of an added watchmaking complication.

Opt for a dress watch with added character, just like this Montblanc Heritage Spirit Moonphase

The Watch Guide recommends: The Montblanc Heritage Spirit Moonphase, because it’s got a cooler complication than just the date. It has a moon phase indicator, seen at six o’clock, within a sub-dial that also features a hand indicating the date. The watch ‘manifests the values of the Montblanc Meisterstück and embodies the finest Swiss watchmaking codes’. The timepiece reflects pure elegance with its bombé dial and its sunburst finish. The 43mm stainless steel case itself has a combination of polished and satin finishing. This timeless design is exactly the kind of watch you cannot go wrong with.

The Classic Jewellery Watch

An Omega vintage jewellery watch from 1956, in platinum and diamonds, was Nicole Kidman’s choice when she won her Emmy

Sometimes, you can just do away with jewellery altogether and your jewelled timepiece will be all the embellishment you’ll need as a part of your outfit. That’s exactly what Nicole Kidman did at the Emmys. When she went up to accept her lead actress trophy for Big Little Lies, all the jewellery she had on was her radiant vintage Omega timepiece from 1956. The Omega ambassador looked stunning wearing the beautiful jewellery piece – a graceful combination of platinum and diamonds. Nicole Kidman even said it herself, in the Moulin Rouge rendition of the song, that ‘Diamonds are a girl’s best friend’! White metal with diamonds make for just the kind of look that will dress up an evening ensemble for a special occasion, without relying on any other jewellery.

From the iconic collection, this Omega Constellation 27mm in white gold, paved with diamonds, is just the right kind of jewelled watch that will uplift any evening ensemble, even without any other jewellery

The Watch Guide recommends: The Omega Constellation 27mm, a resplendent look, in a delicate size. Probably Omega’s most recognisable collection, the Constellation line is extremely superior in terms of design, owing to its classic, symmetrical look, which has elements that are uniquely a part of the Constellation family. A versatile style, it even makes for a splendid jewelled watch. This one here is a 27mm timepiece in a white gold case and Constellation bracelet. The watch is paved with diamonds, seamlessly from case to bracelet, while the dial is decorated with diamonds and a white mother-of-pearl supernova pattern emerging out of the Constellation star at six o’clock. A jewellery watch doesn’t get more versatile and sophisticated than this.
