The Swiss brand is known for their enchanting complications, leading to a host of great functions, courtesy the innovation of cutting-edge technology

May We Recommend

There is an array of terms that have an exceptional perception in the world of watchmaking. The foremost is ‘complications’. While the term is generally enough to raise an alarm, it is considered a novelty in the world of timepieces. To start with, not everyone who wears a watch is an aficionado. So if you fall into that category, The Watch Guide will go an extra mile to acquaint you with watch complications.

Watch complications are added functions apart from the basic display of time. Complications are a key aspect in watches and it takes precision to produce these watches.

Simply put, apart from displaying hours, minutes and seconds, any additional function on a watch is known as a ‘complication’. Today, luxury watch brands strive to develop new and innovative functions for their timepieces, and the more the complications, the greater the labour that goes into making the watch. Complications are the key to high-end watchmaking, and with rapid innovation, they are what set watches apart from one another. Luxury timepieces with modern complications are extremely sought after due to the level of precision and complexity required to produce these watches.

Uncomplicating The Best Of Carl F. Bucherer’s Watch Complications

The magic potion of watchmaking lies in striking the right balance between aesthetics and functions. Carl F. Bucherer (CFB) is among those luxury watch brands that have aced the art of watch complications. Every timepiece from Bucherer is an epitome of skilful development and cutting-edge innovation. Even if their watches are heavy with complications, the dial layout is generally clean and sleek.

The Peripheral Movement

Luxury brands take complications seriously, and Carl F. Bucherer is no exception. With their ‘state-of-the-art engineering and classic watchmaking expertise’, the Swiss brand does not leave the beautiful mechanisms that power the complications to the imagination of a beholder. Hence, the innovation of the groundbreaking peripheral movement.

Carl F. Bucherer used its ‘state-of-the-art engineering and classic watchmaking expertise’, to devise the modern peripheral movement. The sophisticated bridge configuration makes Carl F. Bucherer timepieces a favourite with watch connoisseurs.

Carl F. Bucherer was the first watch manufacture to execute the concept of the peripheral rotor. They developed a winding mass and mounted it on ball bearings, which meant that it would oscillate on the periphery of the movement. This elegant mechanism allows a peek into components that compose the making of the watch. The sophisticated bridge configuration and the various complications mounted on it makes the Manero Peripheral movement a favourite with watch connoisseurs.

CFB’s Smart Solution Complications

With a reputation of manufacturing flawless movement for over 125 years, any watch enthusiast will vouch for their versatility. They are known for their versatility, which spans simple watches and huge watches with a plethora of complications, and everything in between. Let’s take a look at some of the most useful complications by Carl F. Bucherer.

Complication: Perpetual Calendar

The perpetual calendar is one of the most elegant, useful and advanced complications. It is also the most complex calendar as compared to the triple calendar and the annual calendar. Wristwatches that house perpetual calendars are the rage due to their accuracy. As a result, at times, it takes weeks on end to develop them.

The perpetual calendar is one of the most elegant, useful and advanced complications. Perpetual calendars take into account the number of days and those pesky leap years too!

Perpetual calendars take into account the date, day, month and even the year. However, the high point is the fact that it takes care of the changing number of days in a month, and those pesky leap years too! So if a perpetual calendar watch is kept wound, it needs to be adjusted just once in a century.

Carl F. Bucherer Manero ChronoPerpetual

The ChronoPerpetual is as beautiful as the complication we are discussing. ‘Eternity is now under control’ is how Bucherer terms the prowess of the perpetual calendar on this timepiece. The smart calendar can recognise the differing lengths of a month and is aware of the commencement of the next leap year. The only reason it will need an adjustment in 2100 is because that’s when the leap year will be omitted.

‘Eternity is now under control’ is how Bucherer terms the prowess of the Manero ChronoPerpetual. The watch is extremely functional with a host of features other than the perpetual calendar.

The gorgeous 42.5mm, 18-carat rose gold case houses an automatic CFB 1904 calibre movement, inbuilt with 49 jewels and 50 hours of power reserve. The white dial has a lot going for it, courtesy the plethora of functions, ranging from a tachymeter, day-date, chronograph, a moon phase indicator, and of course the perpetual calendar. The hand-stitched Louisiana alligator leather strap and a rose gold pin buckle take the sophistication of this watch to another level.

Complication: Three Time Zones

This undoubtedly is the most practical and useful complication on the list. Back in the day, when every place had its own local time to refer to, this complication was futile. It came into existence when travelling gained popularity and borders started to fade into oblivion.

In 1847, post the introduction of GMT (Greenwich Mean Time), wristwatches got a concrete direction for the development of time-related complications. ‘Captain’s watches’ were the first few to imbibe the dual time zone feature but they used two movements. With time zone watches gaining popularity, watchmakers aced GMT watchmaking techniques and a second-time zone could soon be offered on the same movement.

The three time zone complication undoubtedly is the most practical and useful complication. Multiple time zone watches are considered as ‘travel watches’ and have the largest scope for visual presentation.

Multiple time zone watches are considered as ‘travel watches’ and have the largest scope for visual presentation on the watch – from discs and pointers, to even three-dimensional globes. The rarer ‘world time’ wristwatches display the time in all 24 time zones across the world, through cities on a rotating disc.

Carl F. Bucherer Patravi TravelTec

A deep black travel watch which is ‘ready for take-off’ as soon as you fasten it around your wrist. As the name suggests, Patravi TravelTec is a perfect travel companion that displays three time zones simultaneously. Carl F. Bucherer even brings technically advanced materials to the TravelTec as the watch is built up of extremely durable DLC (diamond-like carbon).

The Carl F. Bucherer Patravi TravelTec is an apt travel companion. The watch is ‘ready for take-off’ as soon as you fasten it around your wrist.

The dark black dial, with an ‘air of mystery’, houses the three time zone counters. The watch comes with an extra bezel, on the dial. The ‘east’ and ‘west’ red accents break the black monotony. The voluptuous case has three pushers, but the highlight is the ‘monopusher’ on the left side. Reading three time zones can be difficult, but this ‘monopusher’ puts things into perspective by advancing the internal bezel, hourly, in either an easterly or westerly direction. The red 24-hour central hand thus indicates the time in the corresponding third time zone on the rotating disc.

Technology on the TravelTec has hit a new height with the monopusher. A beast in terms of performance, it is powered by a certified chronometer calibre, CFB 1901.1.

Carl F. Bucherer has trod new and advanced paths, thanks to the ring around the monopusher, which has ‘E’ (east) and ‘W’ (west) rings to show you the time in the direction you’re travelling. A beast in terms of performance, it is powered by a certified chronometer calibre, CFB 1901.1. Additionally, the elaborately engraved caseback is a visual delight in itself.

Complication: Moon Phase

Moon phase indication is a complication that is derived and retained from the inception of time. Puzzled? Well, timekeeping as a concept was born due to man’s inquisitiveness to track the movement of the sun, moon and everything that leads to change.

Tracking the progress of the lunar cycle for one, was included in the time tracking process. New moon to full moon and the whole cycle takes place over a span of 29 and a half days. This period is important as it leads to the change in seasons and of course, our paycheques bank on it.

Moon phase indication is a complication that is derived and retained from the inception of time. It is based on tracking the progress of the lunar cycle that spans over 29 and a half days.

A moon phase watch is technically very advanced and a product of mechanical wizardry. It displays the present phase of the moon as one would see it in the sky. To counter the discrepancy between the actual moon phase and the lunar cycle, artistic watchmakers powered the moon discs on these watches with 135-tooth gears. This results in the accuracy of the complication to remain unaltered for 122 years!

Carl F. Bucherer Manero ChronoPerpetual Limited Edition

All Carl F. Bucherer watches are engineered with the ulterior motive to find smart solutions by incorporating complications and not to further complicate the functioning of a watch. The Manero ChronoPerpetual is no different. This refined timepiece will definitely outlast its owner. Due to a string of complications, the dial may come across as a little cluttered. However, the sultry black dial with white chronograph counters is very easily legible.

At the 12 o’clock index, the counter displays the date and small seconds. At the heart of this counter lies the 12-hour chronograph register. The complex counter at nine o’clock combines three functions: a leap year indicator, a month display, and a 30-minute chronograph register. It also has a counter at six o’clock to indicate the current day of the week.

The most whimsical display is that of the moon phase, which is presented in a crescent-shaped aperture positioned at three o’clock. At the edge of the dial is the tachymeter, to measure the speed of objects. The burly 42.5mm rose gold case sits comfortably on the wrist without the pushers nudging in. Visible through the caseback is the ultra-modern automatic CFB 1904 calibre encased within clean geometric lines. The oscillating mass and bridge are a sign of true craftsmanship.

Complication: Flyback Chronograph

Flyback as a complication was first introduced in a wristwatch in 1936, and instantly became a collector’s piece due to its uniqueness. Essentially developed as an aviation complication to record precise coordinates and allow the pilot to focus on their primary job – flying. It is put to use beyond just flying purposes, such as diving and running marathons.

The flyback chronograph measures repetitive elapsed time and removes the chance of any redundant reading of time. Flyback as a complication might not be as versatile as others on the list, yet it is one of the most precise and handy movements available.

An instant hit at the time of its launch, the Flyback chronograph complication was originally incorporated for aviators

The complication works at a supersonic speed, and unlike other chronographs, wherein the timer needs to be activated, paused, and reset using different pushers. In this futile process, the elapsed time would not even be registered, making the whole process dubious. The flyback put to rest all the hassles, thanks to having just one pusher.

Carl F. Bucherer Manero Flyback

The Manero Flyback is a surprise package within the Manero collection. Though it fosters the same traits as other watches in the collection, such as faceted indices and a regal leather strap, in terms of its functionality, it is closer to the sportier Patravi collection.

Manero Flyback is a stylish timepiece with a sporty vibe. The sportive aspect on the watch is very evident from the two counters on the dial – a reference to automobile racing. The Flyback complication is useful for recording high speeds.

The sportive aspect on the watch is very evident from the two counters on the dial – a reference to automobile racing.  The swift reset of the Flyback is guided by a column wheel and a pusher at four o’clock. The applied indices and time-showcasing hands are in silver, to match the 43mm steel case. The Manero Flyback houses a CFB 1970 calibre with a 25-jewel movement and a decent 42-hour power reserve.

Apart from the faultless Flyback chronograph, the watch also features a date aperture at six o’clock, a tachymeter on the internal bezel, and a small seconds counter. It is a perfect timepiece for a watch enthusiast on the lookout for ‘a timeless classic of discreet yet powerful elegance.’
