SpotlightDouble Stroke Of Luck: The Armin Strom Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition

The Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition incorporates Armin Strom's patented clutch spring system to deliver a superior chronometric performance and a manually wound movement housed inside its polished 18-karat white gold case

Luxury watch brands invest a ton of resources to develop and refine their in-house movements to achieve the high chronometric performance. This kind of mechanical timepiece offers consistent timekeeping, regardless of different wrist positions or temperatures. Chronometry is the science and practice of precision timekeeping, and within its scope falls ‘resonance’—a phenomenon that combines the oscillation of two independent balance wheels to influence each other’s frequency through small vibrations transmitted between them. Visualise two metronomes positioned next to each other. After some time, the two will start ticking in sync, even without any interference from you. The balance wheels in a watch do the same; influencing each other’s vibrations, till eventually their rhythmic movement gets synchronised. Some call it magic, others call it physics. Not sure what Armin Strom calls it, but the brand have dedicated an entire collection to the concept of resonance. The latest entrant to extend this collection is the Armin Strom Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition limited to 25 pieces—a 39mm white gold watch geared for a formal unboxing at the Geneva Watch Days 2024.

Two Balance Wheels Beating As One: The Armin Strom Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition

The Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition reimagines Armin Strom’s Mirrored Force Resonance released in 2016; a timepiece that set a new standard in chronometric precision and regularity. The GMT Resonance watch not only pays homage to the original but also celebrates the 15th anniversary of the fully integrated manufacture with the resonance complication. Inspired by the 18th-century French clockmaker Antide Janvier’s Resonance Clock, Armin Strom’s Resonance timepieces use the patented clutch spring system that promises unparalleled accuracy.

Most other resonance watches use existing parts of the movement, like the main plate to transmit the vibrations between the two balance wheels. Armin Strom’s patented clutch spring system acts as an intermediary between two balance wheels. This clutch spring saves the resonance between the two balance wheels from being disturbed by external factors like wrist motion, gravity, or temperature changes.

Along with the technical innovations, the watch design focuses on symmetry. The Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition shows two symmetric sky-blue sub-dials, applied with grenage finish. Dual engraved and mirror-polished day and night indicators show the sun and moon to indicate AM/PM on both dials. Plus, the watch features two crowns, positioned on either side of the case adjacent to four and eight o’clock, which helps the wearer to adjust each dial independently.

The Watch Guide

The Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition is powered by the manually wound ARF22 resonance movement with dual mainspring barrels, providing up to 42 hours of power reserve

The Watch Guide

The movement of the Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition beats at a frequency of 3.5Hz and enables independent setting of the two time zones for the GMT function

Two balance wheels, two dials, and two crowns, so why should there be a single strap? Secured by an 18-karat white gold pin buckle, the Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition can be paired with two straps—a matt grey alligator strap with contrast sky-blue stitch and a light grey alligator strap with pearl-grey stitching. The watch, together with its compact case and an antireflective sapphire crystal protecting the dial and caseback, is water-resistant up to 50m.

The Power Of Two Movements

The Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition is powered by the brand-new in-house calibre ARF22, a manually wound resonance movement. This engine features two mainspring barrels that provide up to 42 hours of power reserve when the crown at four o’clock is fully wound. The movement beats at a frequency of 3.5Hz and enables independent setting of the two time zones for the GMT function. You can set the hours and minutes to a desired time on each of the identical sub-dials.

The Dual Time GMT Resonance First Edition embodies the brand’s commitment to the ongoing evolution of watchmaking. It marks a new chapter in resonance for the manufacture, reflecting one of the watchmaker’s visions—to bring the most intricate concepts alive on the wrist.
