This technology that has given both the watch and the series its name, creates two sealed zones which results in rendering the watch completely water proof to a depth of100 metres. The 2321 caliber movement of the watch is perpetual, self-winding and mechanical.

In 1926, Rolex came up with the first waterproof and dust-proof wristwatch, naming it as “Oyster”. Claiming that the watch was waterproof was one thing, proving it was quite another but Rolex achieved this feat in 1927 when Mercedes Gleitze swam across the English channel wearing it. The watch remained in perfect working order even after the swim, which lasted over ten hours. This led to the birth of the testimony concept when Rolex published a full front-page ad in The Daily Mail to proclaim the success of the watch. In 1933 the first expedition to fly over the Everest took place and was equipped with Rolex Oysters.

The back of the Oyster case is hermetically screwed down against the middle case, which is crafted exclusively from a solid block of corrosion resistant 904L Steel. The Fluted case back is a legacy associated with Rolex exclusively. It is extremely robust and forms the backbone of the case to which all the other parts are securely fitted. Another core component, which ensures that the watch is watertight, is the winding crown fitted with twin lock double waterproofness system. The watch is Chronometer Certified.
