Considered to be one of the most recognisable watches in the brands history, this model is perfect for those who have a refined taste and are looking for a time keeper that is stylish yet sober.
The blue dial has been housed in a stainless steel case. It is engraved with silver toned index markers, Arabic numerals 3, 6 and 9 along with hour hands which have been brushed with a luminescent marker for better visibility even in the dark. The three link bracelet has been crafted with stainless steel and has an oyster clasp and the bezel is dome shaped. The time piece has a case size diameter of 34 mm and the dial has been constructed with a scratch resistant sapphire crystal. It has a screw down case back.
The time piece is water resistant to 100 m and it has been powered by a perpetual, mechanical, self-winding movement with an officially certified Swiss chronometer (COSC). It has a screw down winding crown with a twinlock double system that ensures the watch is water proof.
In 1926, Rolex came up with the first waterproof and dust-proof wristwatch, naming it as “Oyster”. Claiming that the watch was waterproof was one thing, proving it was quite another but Rolex achieved this feat in 1927 when Mercedes Gleitze swam across the English channel wearing it. The watch remained in perfect working order even after the swim, which lasted over ten hours. This led to the birth of the testimony concept when Rolex published a full front-page ad in The Daily Mail to proclaim the success of the watch. In 1933 the first expedition to fly over the Everest took place and was equipped with Rolex Oysters.
The aesthetics of the Oyster Perpetual models are deeply rooted in the pioneering origins of Rolex. The watches feature the simplicity of the original watches by Rolex that continue to serve as a symbol of universal and classic style.
The watch is guaranteed to be waterproof to a depth of 100 metres. The Oyster case, which has been used in the watch constitute for an important milestone in the history of contemporary watchmaking. The back of the Oyster case is hermetically screwed down against the middle case, which is crafted exclusively from a solid block of corrosion resistant 904L Steel. The Fluted case back is a legacy associated with Rolex exclusively. It is extremely robust and forms the backbone of the case to which all the other parts are securely fitted. Another core component, which ensures that the watch is watertight, is the winding crown fitted with twin lock double waterproofness system. The watch is Chronometer Certified.
Mercedes Glietze, the first Englishwoman to swim the English Channel is often considered to be the first female celebrity athlete in the United Kingdom. She was also probably the first celebrity to endorse the Rolex Brand. It is interesting that the first celebrity to endorse Rolex as a brand was not a man but a woman. Major brands at that time often chose male celebrities as the face of their product. Rolex earned its right to be called way ahead of its time by choosing this remarkable woman as its ambassador.
