First established in the 1800's, IWC has built a name for itself in the watch making industry owing to its consistent technological developments. Known worldwide for its complicated yet elegant timepieces, IWC has now become one of the top brands in the watch making industry.
The IW390405 belongs to the Portuguese Chronograph Classic series that took birth in the 1930's. A 43mm pocket watch in a hunter style case was designed when two Portuguese businessmen felt the need for a watch that would be as precise as a marine chronometer. The watch came to be widely appreciated for its dapper style and the series has over time developed a dedicated fan following.
The IWC390405 has a round case made of 18 carat rose gold with a transparent case back and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass. This timepiece features a case that is 14.5 mm thick has a diameter of 42 mm with finely brushed edges, a tang buckle and a slim bezel. The strap is made in black alligator leather, made by the famous leather manufacturer, Santoni. Its ardoise grey dial has a fine sunray finish with slightly recessed black sub-dials. Polished rose gold Arabic hour markers and leaf shaped, elegant looking rose gold hour and minute hands compliment the dial.
The timepiece is water resistant to a depth of 30 meters, and is fitted with an automatic chronograph movement with an IWC calibre of 89361. An automatic date function adorns the dial at the 3 o’clock position with two sub-dials; one that covers both as a 60-minute and 12-hour counter and another seconds counter, located at the 6 o’clock and 12 o’clock positions respectively. Having a power reserve of 68 hours, it is fitted with 38 jewels and is equipped with a stopwatch function.

The late 1930s was a pioneer calendar year for the IWC Portugieser watch collection. When two Portuguese businessmen ordered wristwatches with the precision of marine chronometers, IWC Schaffhausen decided to rise up to the challenge by creating a then non-existent wristwatch movement with the crown on the right-hand side which would remedy the problem. The Portugieser is a much sought after watch due to its minimalist design and simplistic approach to styling. Most watches consist of an automatic movement while others, in accordance to the pioneer pocket watch models before, require mechanical hand winding.

2015 marks the 75th anniversary of the IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser family, one of the most beloved and prestigious collection of the brand. This year was kick-started with a number of gala affairs in January, the most elaborate of which saw 800 distinguished guests and IWC Schaffhausen at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva. The evening was star-studded with watch enthusiasts and brand ambassadors. Over the past few years, IWC has continually bested its contemporaries by decorating the Portugieser with modernist technology such as the Tourbillon Mystere, the constant force Tourbillon and the 8-day hand wound movement with definitive plans to bring design and efficiency to new heights over the coming years.

English Actress Emily Blunt shares a love for the Portugieser watches that is very much in common with famous Austrian actor, Christopher Waltz. Friends of the brand also include screenwriter and filmmaker Mark Forster, sports legends such as Lewis Hamilton, Nico Roseberg and Luis Figo, all of whom have dedicatedly attended the launches of the new and improved Portugieser watch collection.

The Portuguese family came to life when a pair of Portuguese businessman ended their search at IWC to produce wristwatches with steel cases and the precision of a marine chronometer. IWC ended crafting a family of watches imbibing the tradition of nautical instruments with modern watch mechanics to form the Portuguese family. This chronograph is slightly larger than its brother, the reference 3714 known as the Portuguese classic; and is considered to be more sophisticated due to its more advanced in-house movement. Its 89361 calibre is housed in a 18-carat red gold case with an ardoise coloured dial. Its rotor is beautified with Geneva stripes which are visible through the transparent case-back. Complete with a black alligator leather Santoni strap, this watch is one class act.
