Cartier is most commonly recognized as the ‘pioneer in modern watch making’. Since the 19th century, this Swiss watch manufacturing giant has been introducing a large variety of forms and styles ranging right from jewellery watches dating back to 1814 as well as pocket watches, and later luxury wrist watches with unique cuts and movements. Louis Cartier saw the wrist watch as the future of the industry. Cartier introduced the Tortue watch with its classic tortoise-inspired shape in the year 1912. At a time when all watches were categorically round, Cartier decided to don a new appearance altogether with its characteristic shape. This groundbreaking design went on to become a classic. In this Cartier watch, the boldness of the design is accentuated in the light-hearted feminine interpretation.
The Cartier Tortue watch is a small model inspired by the distinctive shell of the tortoise. It pays tribute to the Cartier tradition of shaped watches. The lines are straighter, the profile slender and the case is formed of smooth refined facets. It contains of an octagonal crown set with a faceted sapphire on the case. A silvered guilloche dial is additionally incorporated with the sunray effect for an ethereal appearance. Black Roman numerals embroider the watch face, while the hands are sword shaped and crafted from blued steel. The straps are made from brown alligator skin and contain an ardillon buckle in 18 carat pink gold.
The Cartier Tortue watch W1556360 features a mechanical manual winding movement with calibre 8970 MC. It is encased in an 18 carat rose gold case of 30 mm diameter, 24 mm width and 7.3 mm thickness, a watch of dainty proportions for the petite hand. The time piece is water resistant to a depth of 30 meters or 3 bar.
The Tortue collection was officially launched in 1912. The collection with its tortoise inspired case became a gamechanger in terms of design among its typically round-shaped contemporaries.
This unique collection showcases edgy designs yet retains all the signature qualities of a Cartier. The characteristic feature of this collection is the tonneau-shaped case available in pink or white gold, which drew its inspiration from a tortoise shell. The strap meant to supplement the quiet sophistication of the case, is offered in textile or leather.
The dynamic Tortue collection stands out for the myriad functions that it avails for its user. Select models feature a perpetual calendar with an easy-to-read display. The days of the week are indicated with a charming retrograde hand. A multiple time zone indicator is also available in a few of these luxury watches with an option to change the time zone as and when necessity arises; thus making it the ideal collection for a globe trotter. Some pieces also come with a 24-hour time indicator with adjustment for summers and winters. You can choose from automatic and manual watch movements for precise timekeeping.
