The Tank Anglaise model number W5310007 by Cartier is ideal for both men and women with its gold and silver themed frame. Made of stainless steel, the case has a rugged rectangular shape unique to the collection, with dimensions 39.2 x 29.8mm, and a thickness of 9.5mm. The dial of the watch is silver, with intricate guilloche working at the centre, which divides the watch into 12 zones with a distinctive sunray effect. Cartier’s traditional black Roman numerals mark the hours in a bold fashion, with an interior track giving smaller demarcations of time. As all watches from the Tank Anglaise collection, this watch boasts a crown divided into two pieces- a larger 18K pink gold piece faceted into 9 sides, which is incorporated within the lugs, and a smaller steel component with serrated edges, imbedded with a blue sapphire cabochon, and located outside the case. Scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass protects the dial. The bracelet is two tones with brushed as well as polished steel links interspersed with 18K pink gold links. A deployment clasp with a push button attaches the ensemble securely to the wrist.
Cartier’s calibre 077 powered automatic movement of the watch, ensures precise timekeeping functionality. With three sword shaped hands crafted from blue steel, the watch is equipped to provide the hour, minute and second functions. A rectangular date window located at the 3 o’clock position displays the current date for advanced horologic features. Further, the watch is water resistant to a depth of 30m.
The Tank collection by Cartier is the brand’s most iconic line of watches. One of the most significant anachronisms in cinematic history, in which a Tank watch was spotted on screen in the movie ‘The Son of the Sheikh’ in 1926, was caused by Rudolph Valentino’s refusal to take off his watch.
The First World War succeeded in inspiring a whole line of watches when Louis Cartier, the founder of the iconic Cartier brand fashioned watches inspired by the Renault tanks introduced by the Americans on the Western Front. These intricately designed timepieces born from an unusual inspiration were eventually introduced by the brand as the Tank collection in 1917, before they were launched in the markets in 1919.
The Tank collection has cases available in both rectangle and square shapes similar to the proportions of the tough war-machine. The case is further accentuated with a cabochon crown and sword shaped hour and minute hands set in a classic dial with Roman numerals, exuding a vintage feel. The distinctively patterned bracelet is the highlight of this collection. It consists of rectangular links ingeniously integrated with vertical sidebars, which bring to mind the rugged construction of the tank’s tracks used during war.
Originally introduced as far back as World War I, today this coveted collection is crafted using cutting-edge technology to feature enhanced functions such as calendar and power reserve displays. They also offer a broad range of movements from the simple yet precise Quartz to the technologically complicated and unerringly accurate automatic.
The Tank collection finds its manifestation in 6 ranges: Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, MC, Solo and Louis Cartier.
