Established in 1847 by Louis-Francois Cartier as a simple jewellery shop, Cartier diversified into the realm of watches in 1888, fast becoming the maestro in both these complementary fields. Patronized by royalty from English, Parisan, and Russian society, Cartier grew into an international brand well recognized for its exemplary skill in crafting exquisite timepieces.
Ballon Bleu de Cartier was launched in 2007. Watches from this collection, with their distinctive dials and crowns, soon made their way into the hearts and on the wrists of elites from all over the world.

The Ballon Bleu de Cartier model number W6920042 for men, boasts a bold 42mm case constructed of steel with a thickness of 13mm, in a distorted round shape unique to the collection. A second circle at 3 o’clock houses the stainless steel crown, with fluted working across its diameter, and imbedded with the inimitable blue sapphire cabochon for which the collection is named. A masculine shade of black enriches the dial, which forms a convex portion to incorporate the crown. Time intervals are marked by Cartier’s traditional Roman numerals in silver, with minute divisions being denoted by an interior rail-track. The hands are made of steel in a sword shape, moving in perfect tandem to the classic time markers.  Fastened to the wrist by a hidden folding clasp, the bracelet is crafted by combining alternately brushed and polished steel linkages, to enhance the intrigue of the ensemble.

Operating on a mechanical movement with automatic winding and powered by Cartier’s calibre 049, the Ballon Bleu de Cartier W6920042 maintains immaculate time to satisfy the pickiest watch aficionado. The dial boasts an oval calendar window at 3 o’clock, which displays the current date for an added horologic function. Protected by scratch resistant sapphire crystal glass, the watch offers water resistivity to a depth of 30 metres.

The unusual name of the Ballon Bleu de Cartier is due to its light, circular dial which is reminiscent of a balloon, and the blue sapphire adorning the side of every timepiece from this collection. With a streamlined and elegant design, the line offers watches that are suitable for both men and women. Sophisticated artistry and superior watchmaking skills displayed in every timepiece belonging to the Ballon Bleu collection makes it an extremely memorable experience for its patrons.

The primary attraction of the Ballon Bleu de Cartier lies in its simplistic yet contemporary crafting. The perfect circular shape of the case is gently succeeded by a second circle located behind the three o’clock position, which houses the sapphire cabochon set crown. The dial comes in the subdued tones of white and black, with select models extending the colour pallette. The centre of the dial is the guilloche worked in all Ballon Bleu watches, with some cases sporting a date window or additional subdials. The hands are sword shaped and available as hour, minute, and in some cases, seconds indicators. The fixed bezels of these timepieces are adorned with diamonds in certain models for an added element of glamour.  Watches from this collection operate on mechanical or quartz movements, with precise timekeeping abilities. The satin brushed or polished straps of the entire collection makes for watches that are ideal ornaments for the quintessential watch fanatic.

As King Edward VII of the United Kingdom once said, Cartier is the “King of Jewelers and the Jeweler to Kings.” Today, Cartier in general and the Ballon Bleu de Cartier collection in particular is found to cater to the needs of the royals. Kate Middleton was seen sporting a Ballon Bleu watch on her 2014 Australia trip, reinforcing the strong ties Cartier has traditionaly shared with royalty.
