About the Nomos Glashutte Tetra Collection
Introduction
Inside the world of round watches, the edgier timekeepers have enjoyed the idea of originality since its inception. According to The Rake, “So why the enduring appeal? Partly it comes down to watch lover’s innate yen for originality”. On the contrary, the design has also received criticism for being hard to manufacture, particularly the process of waterproofing the timepieces. Swivelling to the protagonist here, the Nomos Tetra collection was first launched in 2016. Since then, the collection has been added with various series such as Neomatik, Symphony, and the Berlin set. The collection has received praise for being unique and imbued with minimalistic aesthetics which Nomos is renowned for.
Design
It is the penchant for symmetry, an endless penchant for being borderline OCD that depicts the stance of the Nomos Tetra collection. The austere clean lines coupled with the Bauhaus-inspired minimalism are inspired by the timepieces created in the early 20th century. The square dial with thin lugs expands it with a much larger silhouette. Whereas, the sleek, slender hands are pleasant to the eyes with small seconds counting every moment of your life, except in the duo series where the absence of seconds hand paves the way to classicism.
Movement
The Nomos Tetra collection is either powered by the brand’s first movement, the hand-wound Alpha or the ultra-thin automatic, the DUW 3001. Alpha movement is the classic movement that powers 33 series inside the Nomos arena. With a power reserve of up to 43 hours, the hand-wound movement is available in different sizes precisely complementing almost every timepiece Nomos has to offer. Whereas, the DUW 3001 is efficiently thin and robust whilst being highly precise. The DUW 3001 also boasts of having an efficiency of 94.2%. The meaning of this percentage is that the friction loss that leads to inaccuracy is down to 5.8%. For comparison, a normal movement’s friction loss is usually up to 20%. Apart from the dexterity of the movements, Nomos has also fitted these two calibres with its signature escapement called the Nomos swing system.
ABOUT THE MOVEMENT
Delivering a balanced diet of technical prowess and petite proportions, the DUW 3001 is one of the most sought-after movements produced by Nomos. Standing at a height of just 3.2mm, the movement might not be the thinnest movement in the world but it sure packs accuracy in its belt. With an accuracy of almost 94.2%, the DUW 3001 achieved this milestone with a friction loss of up to 5.8% (20% being a common occurrence). Apart from the complexities, the DUW 3001 is manufactured in-house with typical Glashütte traditions such as the Glashütte three-quarter plate, ribbing, and Nomos Swing System.
