About the Nivada Grenchen Antarctic Collection

Founded in Grenchen, Switzerland, Nivada Grenchen began producing timepieces that were both durable and innovative, making them a trusted brand for adventurers and explorers. Their Antarctic line, launched in 1950, quickly became a staple due to its connection with the American Navy’s Deep Freeze 1 Task Force. The watch was designed to endure the harshest environments, ensuring reliable performance in sub-zero temperatures and rugged terrains. The watch’s popularity grew after its successful performance during Operation Deep Freeze. This made the Antarctic an emblem of toughness and precision, qualities that continue to define Nivada Grenchen today.

Design And Iterations

Over the years, the brand have introduced several iterations of the Antarctic. One of the most significant reissues is the Super Antarctic, which maintains the core design elements of the vintage Antarctic model but incorporates modern materials and technologies. The case diameter of the Super Antarctic is kept at 38mm, staying true to the size of classic watches. The dial retains the original matte black finish but now offers Super-LumiNova for the markers and hands. The unique lollipop hour hand and large sword-style minute hands harks back to the original Antarctic models. The Spider Salmon iteration features a salmon-coloured dial with a distinctive spider-web texture that plays with light, offering a dynamic yet subtle aesthetic.

The 3.6.9 iteration, on the other hand, focuses on clarity and practicality, with large Arabic numerals at three, six, and nine o’clock. Its minimalist design harks back to the utilitarian field watches of the mid-20th century. Perhaps the most playful iteration in the collection is the Keep Frozen, which is a modern nod to the Antarctic’s rugged origins in scientific expeditions. This version includes a whimsical touch on the dial, featuring the words “Keep Frozen” just above the six o’clock position, a direct reference to the icy conditions the original Antarctic was designed to withstand.

ABOUT THE MOVEMENT

Landeron is a Swiss movement manufacturer that has been a part of the Swiss watchmaking industry since 1925. While now a bit under the radar, it used to be one of the largest suppliers of ebauches in the 1920s, providing movements to brands such as Breitling. The company was particularly renowned for producing reliable and high-precision chronograph calibres. The Landeron 21, also known as L21, is a compact manual-winding movement utilised by several luxury brands. It operates at a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour (4 Hz) and offers a power reserve of approximately 36 hours. It is the equivalent of the ETA 2804-2 and the Sellita SW215-1. With 18 jewels to ensure smooth functioning, the L21 powers hours, minutes, seconds, and a date aperture typically at three o'clock.
