A Fresh Take On A Classic And Historical Baume & Mercier Circa 1950 Timepiece

May We Recommend

Quick question. What do you look for in a dress watch? Style? Simplicity? Functionality? Or maybe a perfect balance of all of the above? Do you find yourself constantly wondering, “what maketh a perfect dress watch?”

As always, The Watch Guide has all the answers just for you! Trust me when I say this, the Clifton collection from Baume & Mercier meets all of the above-mentioned conditions with utter perfection. Inspired by the “Golden Fifties”, the time of ground-breaking horological discoveries, Baume & Mercier pays homage with the introduction of three masterpieces to the elegant Clifton collection.

“Accept only perfection, only manufacture watches of the highest quality”

-Baume & Mercier

The heavily inspired Baume & Mercier Clifton (L-R: MOA10058 and MOA10059)

The Baume & Mercier Clifton (ref MOA10058 and MOA10059) is heavily inspired from a vintage Baume & Mercier circa 1950 round watch. The brand has also gone on record and called it an evolution of their famous Classima collection. The 18k rose gold watch perfectly embodies Baume & Mercier’s 185-year long history of fine watchmaking. An all-in-all dress watch, this particular watch is the perfect everyday addition to your wrist.

An understated statement piece

While many may feel that the design of the watch is too simple, however, the Clifton is definitely one of those watches that make a statement without trying so hard. If I had three words to describe it, I would call it a classic, simple and elegant watch with a slight touch of originality! Yes, you might be questioning why I have used more than three words to describe it, but this is exactly what this watch brings out in you. You just don’t have enough words to describe it. It is THAT spectacular!

Showcasing Baume & Mercier’s expert craftsmanship and artistic capability

It speaks volumes of the expert craftsmanship and artistic capability of the brand’s watchmaking skills. The Baume & Mercier Clifton Automatic is available in two sun satin-finished dial colours; silver and anthracite with gilt Arabic numerals and indexes. The silver and anthracite dials are worn on black and dark brown alligator straps, respectively.

Keeping up with tradition, the Clifton Automatic rose gold is made using a stamping press just like its predecessor from 1950, including a chevé-shaped watch glass. Baume & Mercier has made a conscious decision to focus the watch on comfort. The basic functions and design of the watch are effortlessly stylish with the brand paying extra attention to comfort, for you (the wearer), for the second glances (that this watch deserves) and also for your wallet.

Enough said? Not really! Here is a brief excerpt of what The Watch Guide Team had to say,

Neha- Contributing Editor: It is definitely a classic dress watch! The gold against the grey and silver dials looks great too! I especially like how the brushed side creates a contrast against the polished case.

Devika- Features Writer: It is one of those watches that is suitable for every age group. Not a party watch but it is the perfect watch for a date. You can wear it every day, morning through the day. It will slide up perfectly under your office wear!

Akshmin- Features Writer: From your son’s graduation ceremony to an anniversary, this is a gift-worthy watch! The see-through case back with the logo-engraved crown further adds to the overall elegant look of the Clifton.

Rahul- Features Writer (tries it on): It is very comfortable and light (courtesy the slim case of 9.44mm). The size is perfect for a 39mm and the flat base allows the watch to sit perfectly on the wrist. Baume & Mercier has added a nice touch with the brand name engraved on the rotor.

I think it is safe to say, that we were unanimously taken by the watch!

A classic re-imagined

Moving on, the elegantly designed 18k rose gold case houses an automatic Swiss-made movement Sellita SW300 with a power reserve of up to 42 hours. The 39mm scratch resistant, polished 18k rose gold case sits perfectly well on any wrist size (as mentioned before). The see-through sapphire crystal case back aptly displays the automatic movement with an oscillating rotor adorned with the “Côtes de Genève (KOTE duh je NEV)” decoration. The watch has a water resistance of up to 5ATM which is approximately 50m. The Baume & Mercier Clifton Automatic dial is classically styled with gilt dauphine hour and minute hands tinted with gold, and index hour-markers. The 12 and 6 o’clock positions are marked in Arabic numerals with minute markers on the outer rim of the dial. The date display window positioned at 3 o’clock adds a classic touch to the already traditional looking watch.
