The designers at IWC have taken inspiration from Formula 1 in designing this automatic black ceramic watch. Since 2013, IWC has been the Official Engineering Partner of the Mercedes AMG Petronas Formula 1 Team. The close association has inspired IWC to create a watch that is made with a predominant use of ceramic, a material frequently used in creating cars for the world’s greatest single-seat auto racing event.

IWC has been designing exceptional quality watches since over 140 years. The collaboration of the Swiss watchmaker and the German automaker began in 2004. The partnership has taken watchmaking to an entirely new level. The association, which has been a rather close and successful one was extended in 2013 to a new frontier, Formula 1.

The IWC Ingenieur collection is dedicated to Formula 1, especially the Mercedes AMG team. The collection makes prolific use of ceramic, titanium and carbon, materials frequently used in designing Formula 1 cars. All of the watches in the collection either use one of these materials predominantly or use a combination of them in different manners.

The 46 mm case is made of zirconium oxide and draws inspiration from Mercedes AMG’s ceramic disc brakes. The fixed bezel is also made of ceramic, which gives the watch a rather striking look. Wearing a ceramic watch also has a great deal of other benefits. The material is exceptionally light and durable. It is also scratch resistant and corrosion resistant. Ceramic is also better in the sense that it does not cause skin allergies, unlike metals. Of course, there are just a few who are allergic to metals in this manner, but nonetheless it is a fact worth considering.

The timepiece has a black dial that goes well with the ceramic case and bezel. The dial is marked with luminous hands and indexes for exceptionally clear visibility in any kind of lighting conditions. The 6 and 12 o’clock positions are marked with Arabic numerals and the minutes scale resides on the outer rim of the dial. The date is displayed at 3 o’clock and the dial is covered by a scratch resistant sapphire crystal that is glare-proofed on both sides.  The timepiece has a screw-down crown and is water resistant to a depth of 120 metres. A black rubber strap with a tang buckle is fitted on to the timepiece.

The caseback is covered with a sapphire crystal that allows one to see the movement that powers the IWC Ingenieur Automatic AMG Black Series Ceramic. The watch is powered by an automatic calibre 80110 movement that has a power reserve of 44 hours.

The IWC Ingenieur Ceramic watch is a brilliant timepiece that combines the best of IWC’s watchmaking precision with Mercedes AMG’s engineering performance. Every Formula 1 enthusiast will be impressed by the timepiece’s prolific use of ceramic and its sophisticated racing-inspired design.
