The company was founded in 1881 by a clockmaker in Tokyos Ginza District. Applauded for its accuracy and craftsmanship, the Seiko watch became a resounding success and by 1938, demand for the timepieces pushed yearly production to well over one million watches.

Even minor items such as the oils used in lubricating the watches and the luminous compounds used on the hands and the dials are produced by the Seiko factories

In 1992, Seiko introduced the Kinetic collection, a line of quartz watches that are electrically charged by movement of the wearer.
