Cartier was established in 1847 as modest jewellery workshop by Louis-Francois Cartier. Aided by his son, Alfred Cartier, and grandson, Jacques-Theodule Cartier, the brand soon acquired an untarnished reputation amongst the Russian, French and English elite owing to its knack for crafting watches. King Edward VII of Britain went so far as to call Cartier “the King of Jewellers and the Jeweller to Kings.” With several iconic collections in its brochure, including the Santos, Tank, Ronde, and the Ballon Bleu, the brand is truly the master in watchmaking. The first Tank was created in 1917 by Louis Cartier himself as a gift for General John Pershing of the American Expeditionary Force, as a tribute to the First World War. Its sharp lines and unique make are reminiscent of the Renault Tanks used by the Western Front in the war. The collection today has multiple variations such as the Louis Cartier launched in 1922, the Americaine from 1989, the Francaise from 1996, and the Anglaise from 2012.
The Cartier Tank Shino Wirz model number W1542551 is a piece crafted for men with bold and powerful aesthetics. Its square case typical to the collection is crafted from exquisite platinum with dimensions of 29 mm. With a flinque worked white dial boasting a sunray effect, the watch sports multiple layers of intrigue. The fluted crown is inlaid with Cartier’s iconic blue synthetic spinel. Hourly intervals are marked in Cartier’s traditional black Roman numerals. Sapphire crystal glass protects the glass dial to render it scratch proof. The leather strap is black coloured and attaches to the wrist securely for a comfortable wearing experience.
Powered by mechanical movements, the blued steel hands have a unique bulbous design and move in perfect tandem to the markers, providing accurate hour and minute functions. The watch is water resistant to a depth of 30 m.
The First World War succeeded in inspiring a whole line of watches when Louis Cartier, the founder of the iconic Cartier brand fashioned watches inspired by the Renault tanks introduced by the Americans on the Western Front. These intricately designed timepieces born from an unusual inspiration were eventually introduced by the brand as the Tank collection in 1917, before they were launched in the markets in 1919.
The Tank collection has cases available in both rectangle and square shapes similar to the proportions of the tough war-machine. The case is further accentuated with a cabochon crown and sword shaped hour and minute hands set in a classic dial with Roman numerals, exuding a vintage feel. The distinctively patterned bracelet is the highlight of this collection. It consists of rectangular links ingeniously integrated with vertical sidebars, which bring to mind the rugged construction of the tank’s tracks used during war.
Originally introduced as far back as World War I, today this coveted collection is crafted using cutting-edge technology to feature enhanced functions such as calendar and power reserve displays. They also offer a broad range of movements from the simple yet precise Quartz to the technologically complicated and unerringly accurate automatic.
The Tank collection finds its manifestation in 6 ranges: Francaise, Americaine, Anglaise, MC, Solo and Louis Cartier.
