The OMEGA Speedmaster is perhaps most tested watch in the world. Apart from its chronometer certification, the watch has also been subjected to gruelling tests on board MIR, a Russian space station from 1993 to 1994. The watch passed all tests successfully, thus making it possibly the most precise watch in the universe, having passed stringent tests on the ground and in space.
A trendy combination of modish and sporty, the OMEGA Speedmaster has a 42 mm stainless steel case with a stunning 18K red gold bezel mounted on it. The black coloured dial sports a small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock. 12-hour and 60-minute chronograph recorders are located within a single sub-dial at 3 o’clock, which give the watch a bold look. The two-tone bracelet of red gold and stainless steel adds an eye-catching sparkle to this timepiece.
The Speedmaster is water resistant up to a depth of 100 meters. It has a transparent caseback which allows you to admire the workings of the movement. The watch is powered by the OMEGA Calibre 9300, an automatic movement with Co-Axial escapement which boasts of a power reserve of 60 hours. The timepiece has a chronometer certificate presented to it by COSC, the Official Swiss Chronometer Testing Institute. The movement also features a date complication which is displayed on the dial at the 6 o' clock position. The watch features a tachymeter on the red gold bezel, which enables one to measure average speed. The dial of the watch is protected by a durable, high quality scratch-resistant sapphire crystal.
The Speedmaster is endorsed by visionary astronauts like Eugene A. Cernan and Dr. Buzz Aldrin. Cernan also holds the distinction of being the last man to have left his footprints on the lunar surface. Cernan wore the Speedmaster on the Moon for over a period of three days and is still using the same Speedmaster today.
Omega launched its range of Chronograph watches in the year 1957, under the Speedmaster collection. Originally, the watches in this collection were designed as a sports and racing chronograph, and not for space exploration. It was then selected by NASA in 1965 for all manned space flights.
This remarkable collection of Chronograph watches has been exemplified in several series. Featuring a timeless design, the rugged and reliable Moonwatch Chronograph, is a classic chronograph. The Speedmaster professional was the first watch to be worn on the moon and on all NASA’s manned missions since then. The Dark Side of the Moon collection is a tribute to the astronauts of the Apollo 8 who were the first to see the dark side of the moon. With a metallic grey bezel built from white ceramic, the Grey Side of the Moon has been inspired by the lunar dust, which has preserved all the steps of mankind on the moon. An updated form of the classic Mark II was launched in 2014, which features an illuminated tachymeter. Honouring the decades-long connection of the chronographs with motor racing, the Racing was launched. To commemorate the historic occasion of the first lunar landing, the Apollo 11 45th Anniversary was launched, with its case crafted from grade 2 titanium. Other compelling series from the Speedmaster Collection include the Speedmaster 57, HB-SIA, Skywalker X-33 and Spacemaster Z-33.
The first watch on the moon was the “Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph”, worn by astronaut Buzz Aldrin. The producer, director, writer, and Hollywood actor, Tom Hanks and the adventurer, explorer, and mountaineer, Reinhold Messner, have been seen wearing an Omega Seamaster Professional.
