1957 saw the launch of the first Omega Speedmaster. The timepiece is defined by understated elegance and design. The Speedmaster ’57 is a one of a kind innovation that honours its ancestor.
The Speedmaster ’57 features a round, black dial with silver indexes and stick style hands. Its two sub-dials - a 12 hour and 60 minutes recorder are positioned at 3 o’clock and the seconds hand at 9 o’clock. The date window is placed at 6 o’clock. A highly robust, scratch resistant and anti-reflective sapphire crystal protects the clock face from wear and tear. A brushed bezel is mounted on a 41.50 mm case made of stainless steel. A matching, three piece link bracelet with a deployment clasp easily enables you to fasten the watch on your wrist.
With an Omega caliber 9300 self-winding automatic movement, the chronograph does not require regular winding. The bezel is engraved with a tachymeter that helps in measuring scale. The Co-Axial Escapement provides great precision and makes it highly robust. A silicon balance spring and 2 barrels mounted in series absorb shock and keep the watch safe from damage due to pressure variations. Bi-directional winding reduces winding time, while increasing efficiency. The device also has a power reserve of 60 hours and comes with water-resistance to a depth of 100 metres. This timepiece sports a rhodium plated finish with Geneva arabesque waves.
This device has interestingly been a part of all the six lunar missions.
Omega launched its range of Chronograph watches in the year 1957, under the Speedmaster collection. Originally, the watches in this collection were designed as a sports and racing chronograph, and not for space exploration. It was then selected by NASA in 1965 for all manned space flights.
This remarkable collection of Chronograph watches has been exemplified in several series. Featuring a timeless design, the rugged and reliable Moonwatch Chronograph, is a classic chronograph. The Speedmaster professional was the first watch to be worn on the moon and on all NASA’s manned missions since then. The Dark Side of the Moon collection is a tribute to the astronauts of the Apollo 8 who were the first to see the dark side of the moon. With a metallic grey bezel built from white ceramic, the Grey Side of the Moon has been inspired by the lunar dust, which has preserved all the steps of mankind on the moon. An updated form of the classic Mark II was launched in 2014, which features an illuminated tachymeter. Honouring the decades-long connection of the chronographs with motor racing, the Racing was launched. To commemorate the historic occasion of the first lunar landing, the Apollo 11 45th Anniversary was launched, with its case crafted from grade 2 titanium. Other compelling series from the Speedmaster Collection include the Speedmaster 57, HB-SIA, Skywalker X-33 and Spacemaster Z-33.
The first watch on the moon was the “Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph”, worn by astronaut Buzz Aldrin. The producer, director, writer, and Hollywood actor, Tom Hanks and the adventurer, explorer, and mountaineer, Reinhold Messner, have been seen wearing an Omega Seamaster Professional.
