Being a part of the Speedmaster collection by Omega, this timepiece has a rich and evocative his-tory. The first watch from the series was created in 1957 and soon in 1965; it became NASA’s offi-cial timekeeper after withstanding rigorous evaluation and testing under conditions of zero gravity, temperatures ranging from -18 to +93 degrees Celsius, extreme shocks and intense magnetic fields.
The models from the Speedmaster collection have often been referred to as the most iconic watches produced and marketed by Omega. Having the honour of being a part of all six lunar ex-peditions, these legendary watches are a symbol of the spirit of adventure that has always guided mankind.
The Mark II Co-Axial Chronograph 42.4 X 46.2 mm 318.104.22.168.01.001 from the Speedmaster range features a matt black dial protected by a scratch-resistant sapphire crystal with anti-reflective treatment on both sides to increase readability. Its case is made completely out of stainless steel and is robust, sporty and masculine in appearance. With a 42.40 mm case, the watch is far from shy. An aluminium ring filled with Super-LumiNova illuminates the transparent tachymeter scale on the sapphire crystal. Three sub-dials adorn the face of the watch, with a small seconds sub-dial at 9 o'clock, a 30-minute recorder at 3 o’clock and a 12-hour recorder at 6 o’clock.
Being water-resistant to a depth of 100 meters, this time implement can be used while snorkeling and swimming without being adversely impacted. The heart of the watch is its Co-Axial calibre 3330, a certified chronometer. With a power reserve of 52 hours and Si14 silicon balance spring, this watch will never let you down in terms of accuracy and reliability.
When astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon for the first time, making history on the 21st of July 1969, he was wearing his Omega Speedmaster Professional chronograph. This led to the birth of a unique nickname that has been associated with the range ever since, “The Moonwatch”.
Omega launched its range of Chronograph watches in the year 1957, under the Speedmaster collection. Originally, the watches in this collection were designed as a sports and racing chronograph, and not for space exploration. It was then selected by NASA in 1965 for all manned space flights.
This remarkable collection of Chronograph watches has been exemplified in several series. Featuring a timeless design, the rugged and reliable Moonwatch Chronograph, is a classic chronograph. The Speedmaster professional was the first watch to be worn on the moon and on all NASA’s manned missions since then. The Dark Side of the Moon collection is a tribute to the astronauts of the Apollo 8 who were the first to see the dark side of the moon. With a metallic grey bezel built from white ceramic, the Grey Side of the Moon has been inspired by the lunar dust, which has preserved all the steps of mankind on the moon. An updated form of the classic Mark II was launched in 2014, which features an illuminated tachymeter. Honouring the decades-long connection of the chronographs with motor racing, the Racing was launched. To commemorate the historic occasion of the first lunar landing, the Apollo 11 45th Anniversary was launched, with its case crafted from grade 2 titanium. Other compelling series from the Speedmaster Collection include the Speedmaster 57, HB-SIA, Skywalker X-33 and Spacemaster Z-33.
The first watch on the moon was the “Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph”, worn by astronaut Buzz Aldrin. The producer, director, writer, and Hollywood actor, Tom Hanks and the adventurer, explorer, and mountaineer, Reinhold Messner, have been seen wearing an Omega Seamaster Professional.
