The 3184.108.40.206.01.001 model from Omega was launched under the Speedmaster range, one of the most iconic collections that the brand has come up with. Before the Speedmaster range became NASA’s official timekeeper and accompanied astronauts on six lunar space missions, the timepiece was already well known in the luxury market for serving the interests of the fastest motor sports and rally driver.Drawing inspiration from the dashboard of Italian race cars of 1950s, the speedmaster collection embodies the undying spirit of adventure, the very essence that Omega stands for.
The most distinct feature of the model is its dynamic blue coloured dial. Adorning the dial are three sub-dials, featured at the 3, 6 and 9 o’clock positions with textured “Clous de Paris” patterns. A circular window blends flawlessly with the 12 hour recorder sub-dial placed at the 6 o’clock position to record the current date. The seconds sub-dial is meant for recording seconds, while the third serves as a 30 minute recorder. Crafted completely out of Stainless steel, the watch comes in a single tone, adding a touch of elegance to its appearance. The 40 mm case is protected by a domed sapphire crystal coated with anti-reflective treatment on both the sides, to virtually eliminate glare. Its matt black aluminium tachymetric ring is a unique highly convenient feature for race drivers, since it can be used for recording speed.
Water resistant to a depth of 100 metres, the 3220.127.116.11.03.001 watch will not be damaged even during activities like swimming and snorkelling. Powered by the Omega 3330 caliber, the model is incomparable in terms of precision, stability and accuracy. 52 hours of power reserve ensures a great runtime. This is a certified chronometer with free sprung-balance equipped with Si14 silicon balance spring, a column-wheel mechanism and a co-axial escapement.
Omega launched its range of Chronograph watches in the year 1957, under the Speedmaster collection. Originally, the watches in this collection were designed as a sports and racing chronograph, and not for space exploration. It was then selected by NASA in 1965 for all manned space flights.
This remarkable collection of Chronograph watches has been exemplified in several series. Featuring a timeless design, the rugged and reliable Moonwatch Chronograph, is a classic chronograph. The Speedmaster professional was the first watch to be worn on the moon and on all NASA’s manned missions since then. The Dark Side of the Moon collection is a tribute to the astronauts of the Apollo 8 who were the first to see the dark side of the moon. With a metallic grey bezel built from white ceramic, the Grey Side of the Moon has been inspired by the lunar dust, which has preserved all the steps of mankind on the moon. An updated form of the classic Mark II was launched in 2014, which features an illuminated tachymeter. Honouring the decades-long connection of the chronographs with motor racing, the Racing was launched. To commemorate the historic occasion of the first lunar landing, the Apollo 11 45th Anniversary was launched, with its case crafted from grade 2 titanium. Other compelling series from the Speedmaster Collection include the Speedmaster 57, HB-SIA, Skywalker X-33 and Spacemaster Z-33.
The first watch on the moon was the “Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph”, worn by astronaut Buzz Aldrin. The producer, director, writer, and Hollywood actor, Tom Hanks and the adventurer, explorer, and mountaineer, Reinhold Messner, have been seen wearing an Omega Seamaster Professional.
