Vintage styles are so much in fashion now, which explains the rise in popularity of the Omega Speedmaster collection. This collection was created in 1957 and reflects the post-war sense of aesthetics and designs, where strong and resilient materials were valued over flashier designs. Watches from this particular collection made history in 1969 by being the first watches to be worn on the moon. In fact, there have been over six lunar missions where these watches were worn by astronauts. This aspect is something that sets these devices apart from others as they represent the spirit of pioneering adventure.
The Omega Speedmaster 318.104.22.168.06.001 has a bold grey face that stands out when combined with the elegant stainless steel body. There is a round date window set at the 6 ‘o’ clock position along with a 30 minute recorder and a 12 hour recorder. These are all round and built into the face at equal intervals from each other so as to create a balance in the overall look. The numbers are in the form of English numerals and are written in an elegant font that is slightly large so that one does not have to squint.
This particular model has a host of features that add value for the user. It has a chronograph, date window, tachymeter, and chronometer and even shows small seconds movements. The face is protected by scratch resistant crystal sapphire glass which has had anti reflective treatment conducted on both sides. The case itself is steel and the dial is bold grey. This watch is also water resistant to a depth of 100 metres. This model runs on a caliber of Omega 3304 and it has a power reserve that lasts for 48 hours.
Omega launched its range of Chronograph watches in the year 1957, under the Speedmaster collection. Originally, the watches in this collection were designed as a sports and racing chronograph, and not for space exploration. It was then selected by NASA in 1965 for all manned space flights.
This remarkable collection of Chronograph watches has been exemplified in several series. Featuring a timeless design, the rugged and reliable Moonwatch Chronograph, is a classic chronograph. The Speedmaster professional was the first watch to be worn on the moon and on all NASA’s manned missions since then. The Dark Side of the Moon collection is a tribute to the astronauts of the Apollo 8 who were the first to see the dark side of the moon. With a metallic grey bezel built from white ceramic, the Grey Side of the Moon has been inspired by the lunar dust, which has preserved all the steps of mankind on the moon. An updated form of the classic Mark II was launched in 2014, which features an illuminated tachymeter. Honouring the decades-long connection of the chronographs with motor racing, the Racing was launched. To commemorate the historic occasion of the first lunar landing, the Apollo 11 45th Anniversary was launched, with its case crafted from grade 2 titanium. Other compelling series from the Speedmaster Collection include the Speedmaster 57, HB-SIA, Skywalker X-33 and Spacemaster Z-33.
The first watch on the moon was the “Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph”, worn by astronaut Buzz Aldrin. The producer, director, writer, and Hollywood actor, Tom Hanks and the adventurer, explorer, and mountaineer, Reinhold Messner, have been seen wearing an Omega Seamaster Professional.
