The Omega 318.104.22.168.99.001 model is an innovative addition to the Speedmaster Collection and is widely known as the “Grey side of the moon” or “Lunar Dust”. It was first displayed in Basel and the new version that was launched has everything in common with the old one – the platinum dial, the superb alligator strap and the grey ceramic case. The white ceramic case got its attractive grey color after it was subjected to 20,000 degree Celsius for three hours constantly on a plasma heating chamber. The cross sectional view of the case also exhibits a grey tone.
This Omega timepiece for men, appears exceptionally great and is admired by watch connoisseurs across the world. The 44.25 mm round sand blasted platinum dial comes in an extremely sturdy ceramic case. With its moonwatch-style hands, a 60-minute and 12-hour recorder positioned at 3 o’clock, a small seconds sub-dial located at 9 o’clock, and the date window placed strategically at 6 o’ clock, the dial looks immensely stylish. The watch remains securely fastened to your wrist with its grey alligator leather strap also featuring a tang buckle. This watch’s index hour markers have luminescent coating, which allows you to see the time even when there is no light.
Made of sapphire crystal, the case window acts as a perfect shield for the watch. It keeps the timepiece free from scratches and safeguards it from bumps and falls. Moreover, the timepiece has a water resistance up to 30 metres, which doesn’t let the watch get damaged due to accidental splashes.
Powered by the Omega’s patented Co-Axial calibre 9300 movement, the watch sports an exemplary automatic function enabling you to read the most accurate time. It has a power reserve of 60 hours.
Omega launched its range of Chronograph watches in the year 1957, under the Speedmaster collection. Originally, the watches in this collection were designed as a sports and racing chronograph, and not for space exploration. It was then selected by NASA in 1965 for all manned space flights.
This remarkable collection of Chronograph watches has been exemplified in several series. Featuring a timeless design, the rugged and reliable Moonwatch Chronograph, is a classic chronograph. The Speedmaster professional was the first watch to be worn on the moon and on all NASA’s manned missions since then. The Dark Side of the Moon collection is a tribute to the astronauts of the Apollo 8 who were the first to see the dark side of the moon. With a metallic grey bezel built from white ceramic, the Grey Side of the Moon has been inspired by the lunar dust, which has preserved all the steps of mankind on the moon. An updated form of the classic Mark II was launched in 2014, which features an illuminated tachymeter. Honouring the decades-long connection of the chronographs with motor racing, the Racing was launched. To commemorate the historic occasion of the first lunar landing, the Apollo 11 45th Anniversary was launched, with its case crafted from grade 2 titanium. Other compelling series from the Speedmaster Collection include the Speedmaster 57, HB-SIA, Skywalker X-33 and Spacemaster Z-33.
The first watch on the moon was the “Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph”, worn by astronaut Buzz Aldrin. The producer, director, writer, and Hollywood actor, Tom Hanks and the adventurer, explorer, and mountaineer, Reinhold Messner, have been seen wearing an Omega Seamaster Professional.
