The OMEGA Speedmaster holds an important place in history. The timepiece was a part of all six lunar missions. In 1969, when man first landed on the moon, the OMEGA Speedmaster was there and became the first timepiece to be worn on the Moon, thus earning it the title of “Moonwatch”.
This iconic timepiece from the OMEGA Speedmaster family is an impressive representation of the brand’s adventurous spirit. The OMEGA Speedmaster Professional “Moonwatch” features a black elegant looking dial. The black bezel, with its tachymetric scale, is mounted on a 42 mm stainless steel case and presented on a matching stainless steel bracelet.
- The watch is graced by a small seconds sub-dial at 9 o’clock.
- It also has a 30-minute and 12-hour recorder at 3 and 6 o’clock respectively.
- A central chronograph hand is present for measuring short intervals of time.
- The watch also features a tachymeter which helps in measuring speed.
- The watch is water resistant up to 50 meters.
- It features the famous manual-winding chronograph mechanical movement that was worn on the Moon.
- The watch has a power reserve of 48 hours.
- The dial is covered by hesalite crystal, which is inherently not so shiny and has less glare, thus ensuring proper visibility even in the harsh sunlight.
Moonwalker and space visionary Buzz Aldrin has been endorsing the Speedmaster family since 2009. He was the Lunar Module pilot on mankind’s first landing on the Moon during NASA’s Apollo 11 mission. The OMEGA Speedmaster strapped to his spacesuit was the first watch worn on the Moon. OMEGA is proud to have such a great personality as a part of its family.
Omega launched its range of Chronograph watches in the year 1957, under the Speedmaster collection. Originally, the watches in this collection were designed as a sports and racing chronograph, and not for space exploration. It was then selected by NASA in 1965 for all manned space flights.
This remarkable collection of Chronograph watches has been exemplified in several series. Featuring a timeless design, the rugged and reliable Moonwatch Chronograph, is a classic chronograph. The Speedmaster professional was the first watch to be worn on the moon and on all NASA’s manned missions since then. The Dark Side of the Moon collection is a tribute to the astronauts of the Apollo 8 who were the first to see the dark side of the moon. With a metallic grey bezel built from white ceramic, the Grey Side of the Moon has been inspired by the lunar dust, which has preserved all the steps of mankind on the moon. An updated form of the classic Mark II was launched in 2014, which features an illuminated tachymeter. Honouring the decades-long connection of the chronographs with motor racing, the Racing was launched. To commemorate the historic occasion of the first lunar landing, the Apollo 11 45th Anniversary was launched, with its case crafted from grade 2 titanium. Other compelling series from the Speedmaster Collection include the Speedmaster 57, HB-SIA, Skywalker X-33 and Spacemaster Z-33.
The first watch on the moon was the “Omega Speedmaster Professional Chronograph”, worn by astronaut Buzz Aldrin. The producer, director, writer, and Hollywood actor, Tom Hanks and the adventurer, explorer, and mountaineer, Reinhold Messner, have been seen wearing an Omega Seamaster Professional.
