Observatory trials focused around testing the accuracy with which watches measured time i.e. whether or not they could match the time determined by the movement of faraway stars with respect to Earth’s rotation. Only Omega and Patek Philippe used to participate in these trials every year, but Omega rewrote history in 1951 when it reset its own records for precise timekeeping in each category. In 1952, underscoring Omega’s achievements, a new line aptly named ‘Constellation’ was born.
Make and Design
The Omega Constellation 126.96.36.199.53.002 women’s watch is a testimony to Omega’s mastery in design and expertise. The watch has a 27 mm round steel case and comes with a corresponding steel bracelet. An 18K red gold wide bezel with engraved roman numerals rests on the case. The dial can be viewed through the dome shaped scratch-resistant and anti-reflective sapphire crystal, which in turn is held by the iconic ‘Griffles’ or claws giving it superior water-resistance to a depth of 100 meters. Lying beneath the crystal is a blue dial, vivid and enchanting with its Supernova pattern, 11 diamond set indexes, a date aperture at the 3 o’ clock position and the significant gold Constellation star.
At the device’s core lies the Omega 8520 Caliber whose rhodium plated movement is partially visible through the transparent case back. The self-winding movement watch owing to its Co-Axial Escapement has immense precision and stability even under varying temperatures and magnetic fields along with a power reserve of 50 hours. Moreover the Coaxial escapement incorporates radial friction instead of sliding friction among the moving parts, which reduces wear and tear.
The year 1982 saw the introduction of the iconic "griffles" or claws in the Constellation “Manhattan”. It was meant to firmly hold the sapphire crystal in place and ensure that the watch remained waterproof.
The Constellation Collection by Omega was launched in 1952, has since been renowned for its ultra precise movements and elegantly refined cases. Century, a limited edition wristwatch unveiled in 1948 on the firm’s 100th anniversary, is the progenitor of the collection. Due to the overwhelming response received by this watch, the brand launched the Constellation collection, which imbibed the same qualities. In 1982, the Constellation “Manhattan” was launched, with which the four claws or “griffes” were introduced that keeps the sapphire crystal case intact to securely render the watch waterproof.
The Omega Constellation collection has been exemplified in several sub collections that include the Gents’ Collection, Ladies’ Collection, Orbis Constellation Star, Sedna, and the Luxury Edition. The watches in the Gents’ collection feature distinctive design factors – the renowned claws on the case, horizontal links for utmost comfort, and a Constellation star, which is situated at the 6o’ clock position. Featuring a vast range of watches with different sizes, metals, dials, and diamond options to choose from, the Ladies’ Collection contains at least one watch to suit every wrist. The Orbis Constellation Star supports Orbis International – which gives advanced eye care to some of the most inaccessible regions in the world, and it’s Flying Eye Hospital. An 18-carat rose gold alloy, consisting of copper, palladium, and at least 75% gold, has been used to craft the Constellation Sedna. This breathtaking alloy adds an innovative and stunning appeal to the watch, giving it a long lasting rose-coloured hue. The magnificent Omega Constellation Luxury Edition watches showcase multitude of diamonds in spectacular supernova pattern, which dazzles the eyes of the onlooker.
A gold Omega Constellation “Manhattan” was worn by the former president of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev. One of the 20th century’s most popular musicians, cultural icon, actor, and American singer, Elvis Presley had worn a black-dialled Constellation Calendar.
