‘Constellation’, in astronomy refers to a collection of stars whose movement is constant and predictable through the celestial vault. And Omega was bang on, when it launched a series of watches with exquisite detailing and ultra-precise movements in 1952 and named the line ‘Constellation’.
Each Omega Constellation watch previously bore the symbol of the Cupola of the Geneva Observatory, surrounded by eight stars representing the highest chronometric achievements at the world’s observatories. In 1951, Omega had reset its own record by breaking a record for precision in every category.
The Omega Constellation 184.108.40.206.06.002 men’s watch inherits the legacy of this legendary line and has a 35mm stainless steel case and complementing bracelet made of steel, accentuated by bars of 18K red gold. It has the distinctive “Griffes”, or claws running horizontally which hold the dome shaped scratch-resistant anti-reflective sapphire crystal ensuring water resistance to 100 metres. A red gold wide bezel with roman numerals engraved surrounds the warm grey dial. The dial has gold stick indexes, sword shaped hands and a date aperture at the 3 o’ clock position. True to its name the watch bears a gold star at the 6 o’clock position that retells its story.
At its heart lies the Omega’s Co-Axial caliber 2500 with rhodium plated finish which can be viewed through the transparent back case. Omega’s revolutionary co-axial escapement has earned distinction at the highest level of watch making and is known for its great mechanical efficiency, accurate timekeeping and its invariability in fluctuating external conditions and magnetic fields. The self-winding COSC certified chronometer has a power reserve of 48 hours.
The ‘Constellation’ line has adorned the wrists of many famous personalities including Mikhail Gorbachev and Elvis Presley who wore an Omega Constellation when he served at the US Army, tennis star Anna Kournikova and actor Zhang Zi.
The Constellation Collection by Omega was launched in 1952, has since been renowned for its ultra precise movements and elegantly refined cases. Century, a limited edition wristwatch unveiled in 1948 on the firm’s 100th anniversary, is the progenitor of the collection. Due to the overwhelming response received by this watch, the brand launched the Constellation collection, which imbibed the same qualities. In 1982, the Constellation “Manhattan” was launched, with which the four claws or “griffes” were introduced that keeps the sapphire crystal case intact to securely render the watch waterproof.
The Omega Constellation collection has been exemplified in several sub collections that include the Gents’ Collection, Ladies’ Collection, Orbis Constellation Star, Sedna, and the Luxury Edition. The watches in the Gents’ collection feature distinctive design factors – the renowned claws on the case, horizontal links for utmost comfort, and a Constellation star, which is situated at the 6o’ clock position. Featuring a vast range of watches with different sizes, metals, dials, and diamond options to choose from, the Ladies’ Collection contains at least one watch to suit every wrist. The Orbis Constellation Star supports Orbis International – which gives advanced eye care to some of the most inaccessible regions in the world, and it’s Flying Eye Hospital. An 18-carat rose gold alloy, consisting of copper, palladium, and at least 75% gold, has been used to craft the Constellation Sedna. This breathtaking alloy adds an innovative and stunning appeal to the watch, giving it a long lasting rose-coloured hue. The magnificent Omega Constellation Luxury Edition watches showcase multitude of diamonds in spectacular supernova pattern, which dazzles the eyes of the onlooker.
A gold Omega Constellation “Manhattan” was worn by the former president of the Soviet Union, Mikhail Gorbachev. One of the 20th century’s most popular musicians, cultural icon, actor, and American singer, Elvis Presley had worn a black-dialled Constellation Calendar.
