Established for the very first time in the 1800's, IWC has been known for its consistent advancements in the technological sphere of the watch making industry. The force behind the anti-gravity and anti-magnetic movements, the brand is an integrated manufacturer that creates and assembles all the parts of a watch in-house. Known worldwide for its complicated and elegant timepieces, the brand has carved its own niche in the industry and has a dedicated following.
The IWC Portuguese Yacht Club Chronograph is known for its classic yet refined look. This watch is a limited edition of 1000 pieces for the Laureus Sport for Good Foundation. Featuring a stainless steel, round case with a solid case back, the watch has a screw-down crown and a fixed bezel made in stainless steel. The case is 45.4 mm in diameter and 14.5 mm in thickness. Its metallic blue analog dial has silver tone Arabic numeral markers and hands. The hands and markers are luminescent that ensure greater visibility in the dark and also give the watch an elegantly subdued sheen. The sturdy looking strap is made in black rubber and features a deployant clasp with a push button.
Equipped with an automatic movement, IW390213 has an IWC calibre 89361 engine with chronograph, date, hour, minutes and seconds functions. The watch boasts of having a power reserve of 68 hours when fully wound. Water-resistant to a depth of 60 meters, it can withstand minor splashes of water. The dial features an automatic date function located at the 3 o’clock position along with two sub-dials and minute markers around the outer rim. The blue sub-dials located at the 6 o’clock and 12 o’clock positions, show 60-second and 60-minute counters respectively. Flaunting 40 jewels, the timepiece looks elegant and is an efficient piece of watch machinery.
The late 1930s was a pioneer calendar year for the IWC Portugieser watch collection. When two Portuguese businessmen ordered wristwatches with the precision of marine chronometers, IWC Schaffhausen decided to rise up to the challenge by creating a then non-existent wristwatch movement with the crown on the right-hand side which would remedy the problem. The Portugieser is a much sought after watch due to its minimalist design and simplistic approach to styling. Most watches consist of an automatic movement while others, in accordance to the pioneer pocket watch models before, require mechanical hand winding.
2015 marks the 75th anniversary of the IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser family, one of the most beloved and prestigious collection of the brand. This year was kick-started with a number of gala affairs in January, the most elaborate of which saw 800 distinguished guests and IWC Schaffhausen at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva. The evening was star-studded with watch enthusiasts and brand ambassadors. Over the past few years, IWC has continually bested its contemporaries by decorating the Portugieser with modernist technology such as the Tourbillon Mystere, the constant force Tourbillon and the 8-day hand wound movement with definitive plans to bring design and efficiency to new heights over the coming years.
English Actress Emily Blunt shares a love for the Portugieser watches that is very much in common with famous Austrian actor, Christopher Waltz. Friends of the brand also include screenwriter and filmmaker Mark Forster, sports legends such as Lewis Hamilton, Nico Roseberg and Luis Figo, all of whom have dedicatedly attended the launches of the new and improved Portugieser watch collection.
