About the IWC Portuguese Collection
Features
The late 1930s was a pioneer calendar year for the IWC Portugieser watch collection. When two Portuguese businessmen ordered wristwatches with the precision of marine chronometers, IWC Schaffhausen decided to rise up to the challenge by creating a then non-existent wristwatch movement with the crown on the right-hand side which would remedy the problem. The Portugieser is a much sought after watch due to its minimalist design and simplistic approach to styling. Most watches consist of an automatic movement while others, in accordance to the pioneer pocket watch models before, require mechanical hand winding.
Events
2015 marks the 75th anniversary of the IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser family, one of the most beloved and prestigious collection of the brand. This year was kick-started with a number of gala affairs in January, the most elaborate of which saw 800 distinguished guests and IWC Schaffhausen at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva. The evening was star-studded with watch enthusiasts and brand ambassadors. Over the past few years, IWC has continually bested its contemporaries by decorating the Portugieser with modernist technology such as the Tourbillon Mystere, the constant force Tourbillon and the 8-day hand wound movement with definitive plans to bring design and efficiency to new heights over the coming years.
Associations
English Actress Emily Blunt shares a love for the Portugieser watches that is very much in common with famous Austrian actor, Christopher Waltz. Friends of the brand also include screenwriter and filmmaker Mark Forster, sports legends such as Lewis Hamilton, Nico Roseberg and Luis Figo, all of whom have dedicatedly attended the launches of the new and improved Portugieser watch collection.

For me if I would be looking at the best brand in the world which is concerned with making exquisite time pieces then it obviously has to be IWC. The IWC Portuguese perpetual calendar is no different to what you should except from a brand of the likes of IWC. The watch is crafted in rose gold. Plus at first sight you are simply taken back by the double phase moon sub dial marked up with n and s alphabets. A true master piece. Plus there is also the power reserve indicator which provides you with a power back up of seven days. That's phenomenal. Another striking feature of this watch is that it displays date, month and year. Well the first two can be found in any expensive Swiss time piece. But the year feature is simply jaw dropping and lefts you with a thought as to what far Swiss people have taken the art of watch making.

The IWC Portuguese perpetual calendar is one of the most brilliant looking watches I have ever seen. The most important thing that draws your attention is the double moon phase for the Northern and Southern hemispheres represented by 'n' and 's' alphabets. The sub-dial between 2 and 4 o'clock represents the date, while the inner circle in white has numerals up to 7 and it represents the power reserve of the watch. It means the watch can last up to 7 days when not worn. The sub-dial at 6 o'clock represents the month. The aperture between 7 and 8 o'clock represents the year. Between 8 and 10 o'clock is the date display. The inner circle represents the seconds. The two gold toned hands point to gold toned numerals. The gold case looks absolutely classy. The black dial complements the gold toned numerals.

An elite watch, IWC’s Portuguese Perpetual Calendar is rich in IWC heritage showcasing the best of today’s world through a yesteryear charm coloured lens. This watch shares a special bond with the moon, showing its progress through the month and the number of days till the next full moon. The display features mirror-images of the moon in the northern and southern hemisphere and sub-dials featuring the perpetual calendar display for the date, day, month and year in four digits. Its beautifully complex 51614 calibre is housed in an 18-carat red gold case and is visible though the transparent case-back which also flaunts the Rotor with 18-carat gold medallion and the sublime Glucydur beryllium alloy balance. A watch that softly links the fortunes of the moon and time.

This watch from the house of IWC is a part of Portuguese collection that is also known as Portuguese Perpetual calendar. As the name suggests the watch demonstrated date, day, month and year highlighted on the black dial. The USP of the timekeeper is the display of number of days remaining for the next full moon that also imitates the shape of moon through the phase. The automatic movement is the reflection of WC-manufactured 51614 caliber and 62 jewels. The watch comes in both 18 K gold as well as white gold versions combined with brown and black leather strap respectively. The 44 mm gold case of this watch is covered with sapphire crystal glass that is protected with anti reflective coating on both sides. This watch is specially crafted for the sailors and those who love to carry a perpetual calendar on their wrist.

A watch for people who fall into the UHNI (ultra high net worth) category, the juxtaposition of the black dial with the gold case makes this watch a dream. The twin moon phase adds to the charm, along with the brown alligator leather. With it's rich history since 1868, IWC holds the distinction of being the only high end watch maker in east Switzerland. One for the history lovers, and for those who want a status symbol.
