IWC, since its inception in the 1800s, has made phenomenal technological contributions in the watchmaking industry. The brand has been greatly involved in developing anti-magnetic and anti-gravity movements, and creates and assembles all parts of the watch in-house. Best known for its world class complicated watches, the brand has now become a force to reckon with.
The IW371482 model belongs to the Portuguese Chronograph series. The series has a history dating back to the 1930s when two Portuguese businessmen searched for a watch as precise as a marine chronometer. It culminated into the production of a pocket watch movement in a hunter style case. At 43 mm, the watch was huge but worked best for the job and was appreciated for its dapper style. Through the years, IWC Portuguese Chronographs have developed a cult status amongst watch lovers.
The IW371482 sports a round dial in solid 18 carat rose gold with finely brushed edges, a slim, polished, fixed bezel and a pull-out crown. Flaunting a metallic gray Ardoise dial, it has, on the outer diameter, a seconds counter ring and 2 sub-dials – a 30-minute counter at the 12 o’clock position and a seconds sub-dial at the 6 o’clock position. The dial features rose gold Arabic numeral hour markers and polished 18 carat rose gold hands. The case is 40.9 mm in diameter with a solid case back and features scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass that provides a clear view of the clock face . The strap is made of black alligator leather with a tang buckle.
The watch boasts of being water-resistant to a depth of 30 meters. It is equipped with the IWC Calibre 79350 movement and is fitted with 31 jewels. Having a power reserve of 44 hours when fully wound, this is one timepiece that has both style and substance.
The late 1930s was a pioneer calendar year for the IWC Portugieser watch collection. When two Portuguese businessmen ordered wristwatches with the precision of marine chronometers, IWC Schaffhausen decided to rise up to the challenge by creating a then non-existent wristwatch movement with the crown on the right-hand side which would remedy the problem. The Portugieser is a much sought after watch due to its minimalist design and simplistic approach to styling. Most watches consist of an automatic movement while others, in accordance to the pioneer pocket watch models before, require mechanical hand winding.
2015 marks the 75th anniversary of the IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser family, one of the most beloved and prestigious collection of the brand. This year was kick-started with a number of gala affairs in January, the most elaborate of which saw 800 distinguished guests and IWC Schaffhausen at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva. The evening was star-studded with watch enthusiasts and brand ambassadors. Over the past few years, IWC has continually bested its contemporaries by decorating the Portugieser with modernist technology such as the Tourbillon Mystere, the constant force Tourbillon and the 8-day hand wound movement with definitive plans to bring design and efficiency to new heights over the coming years.
English Actress Emily Blunt shares a love for the Portugieser watches that is very much in common with famous Austrian actor, Christopher Waltz. Friends of the brand also include screenwriter and filmmaker Mark Forster, sports legends such as Lewis Hamilton, Nico Roseberg and Luis Figo, all of whom have dedicatedly attended the launches of the new and improved Portugieser watch collection.
