In order to celebrate the 125th anniversary of IWC, the Portuguese collection with its fully integrated timepieces got introduced to the world. This limited, but special anniversary edition of the collection was crafted in order to bring revolutionary change into the watch making craft, and to establish a new base for the wristwatches. Therefore, with this thought process, the skilled engineers of Portuguese collection championed the art of introducing interesting elements in watches, and rose to the peak of haute horlogerie.
The design of the IWC Portuguese Automatic Chronograph Men’s Watch 371480 was conceptualized on the basis of the first Portuguese timepieces that were created during the 1930s. This traditional piece has timeless design elements, and its solid 18k rose gold case comes with fine polished edges, and smooth slim bezel ring with lugs. The silver toned “Ardoise” dial is seamlessly integrated with the hands, numerals and sub-dials. The elegant dial of this beautiful watch houses polished rose gold Arabic numerals as well as hour and minute hands. What gives a stunning contrast to the dial, is its blue seconds’ hand. The outer rim of the dial is etched out with minute markers, which gives more clarity to the face of the dial. Apart from calibrating the movement of the watch, the unique rose gold crown along with two rose gold pushers, heightens the overall appeal of this luxurious wrist accessory.
The IWC Portuguese Collection Men’s Timepiece 371480 is embedded with calibre 79350, beating at 28,800 vph, and carrying an amazing power reserve of 44 hours. This automatic chronograph time machine exhibits such essential features as a 30-minute counter sub-dial, which is placed at the 12 o’clock position, small running seconds’ sub-dial placed at the 6 o’clock position, along with a large blue central seconds hand counter. Furthermore, the watch is secured by a rich brown croco-embossed leather strap with tang buckle, making for a firm grip and comfortable wear on the wrist. Its scratch resistant Sapphire crystal glass case lends shatter proof durability to this precious timepiece. Being water-resistant up to a depth of 30 metres, means the watch can withstand water splashes and monsoon weather conditions.
The late 1930s was a pioneer calendar year for the IWC Portugieser watch collection. When two Portuguese businessmen ordered wristwatches with the precision of marine chronometers, IWC Schaffhausen decided to rise up to the challenge by creating a then non-existent wristwatch movement with the crown on the right-hand side which would remedy the problem. The Portugieser is a much sought after watch due to its minimalist design and simplistic approach to styling. Most watches consist of an automatic movement while others, in accordance to the pioneer pocket watch models before, require mechanical hand winding.
2015 marks the 75th anniversary of the IWC Schaffhausen Portugieser family, one of the most beloved and prestigious collection of the brand. This year was kick-started with a number of gala affairs in January, the most elaborate of which saw 800 distinguished guests and IWC Schaffhausen at the Salon International de la Haute Horlogerie in Geneva. The evening was star-studded with watch enthusiasts and brand ambassadors. Over the past few years, IWC has continually bested its contemporaries by decorating the Portugieser with modernist technology such as the Tourbillon Mystere, the constant force Tourbillon and the 8-day hand wound movement with definitive plans to bring design and efficiency to new heights over the coming years.
English Actress Emily Blunt shares a love for the Portugieser watches that is very much in common with famous Austrian actor, Christopher Waltz. Friends of the brand also include screenwriter and filmmaker Mark Forster, sports legends such as Lewis Hamilton, Nico Roseberg and Luis Figo, all of whom have dedicatedly attended the launches of the new and improved Portugieser watch collection.
